New tank - side by side JayHoe sump

Hi all,

I am about to set up a 72"x26"x26" with external BeanAnimal overflow. Originally was plaaning it to be 40mm Bean but 50mm bean may be required.

The reason... I am planning on placing the sump next to the DT with the external box directly over it.

I haven't seen anything else like this before and am looking for any comments and advice before I firm up all dimensions and place orders! The tank is 210 US Gallon (797 litre).

Thanks all,

JayHoe

How much water do you plan on running through the sump? I can't imagine you would want more than what the 40mm pipe would give you. If you go to 50mm pipe it will be very difficult to dial in your flow even with a gate valve.

The DT is just under 800ltr and the sump usable volume is 150-200 ltr. I was assuming 5x DT per hour and then allowed extra so 5,000lph.

However someone on another board hinted I should be looking at 10x DT thru sump per hour.

This is frustrating lol - I can design the set up, I have the money burning a hole, I just can't get the flow, bulkhead and pipe size decided!

interesting design. Do you plan on hiding the sump? Is it behind a wall like a peninsula build?

Hi sde and thanks!,

Yes it will be hidden. All that will be seen is the front and right hand end of the DT. Everything to the left and above will be hidden away.

As long as you have a little extra pump volume left over to run any reactors you might want tied to your return pump there is no need to have over 5 times your display tank in flow via your return pump, in tank power heads will provide the extra flow you need much more efficiently.

Thanks theGrun.

I am happy having the over powered pump that I can dial down. I am going to *try* and do the calculations just to confirm if 40mm drains is enough or if 50mm would be wise. Then I am sorted to do final drawings and pull the trigger on tank and sump!

Cheers

John
