new tank syndrome?

I'm beginning to think I have new tank syndrome! I've had a case of brown diatom for about a year now . every other day I have to clean glass . not so much on sand my diamond goby keeps it stirred up. and none on rocks . but it has always been there. the tank is 18 months old. so I think it should be done. and I still can't keep coral? anyone else have this problem. I've listed my para. here b-4 and didn't seem to get much input , although I did get some good advice but nothing helped. :headwallblue:

HI! thanks for responding. I think I have a great cuc. snails , Turbo Cerinth, Asternia, 2 conches, 1 cucumber, 2 serpent starfish 1 spinney starfish. 10-15 blue hermit crabs 5 red hermit crabs.

If you are having to clean the glass every other day, more CUC isn't the answer, especially considering what you have already. You issue seems like it's a nutrients problem. Where did your rock and sand come from? Do you do regular water changes? Do you use a Ro/Di system or use tap? What is your cleanup process like...do you blow off the rocks and siphon your sand every month or two?

Listing you most recent parameters would really help us too. Not something from before, do new tests and post them.

post params again..
give us details..tank size, equipment, maintenance schedule, water source, salt mix, type of sand used, food fed,etc...

define still can't keep coral? What happens? how long?

Sounds like you have that covered...lol. Have you ever tested your RODI water for TDS? I glanced through you previous posts but I didn't notice that brought up. I know my tap water is horrible and I go through filters quickly.

Sorry, just sort of throwing things out there.

Ya, I will , I do a monthly water change of 18 gl. I have a 90 gl tank. my rock came from the LFS. Said it was live rock I bought the purple stuff thought it would look better. put about 70 lb. in. I do blow it out with a turkey baster. I haven't vac. the sand for about 6 months though maybe I should. some say not to though? Ill post new param.

No I haven't tested my water. I have 2 sediment filters on my house then a 7 stage rodi unit only 6 months old . B=4 that I just used my tap water.

If I'm reading correctly, you've only had your RODI running for 6 months and prior to that for about 12 months, you've been using tap?

If that is the case, then I think that may be the issue for not being able to keep coral after all this time. What's the TDS of your tap water? Perhaps do a large, 75% water change to try to dilute the nutrients that have built up from the 12 months of using tap water. Curious as to what your nitrate and phosphate readings are...
