I feel like I am about to watch my first child be born... I relocated to the SF Bay area from Mississippi (a culture shock to say the least, but I'm loving it) three years ago. When I moved, I had 3 SPS tanks, one fish only, and a mixed reef; all of which unfortunately, I had to part with. It was almost like losing a family member.
It's now time (FINALLY) to set up a new one. I have been browsing the forums lately, and it seems as though there have been some changes in the hobby these past few years. For now, due to limited space, I am going to stick with something probably in the 20 - 30 gallon range, and eventually upgrade. My pride and joy back home was my 60 gallon cube, and I am leaning towards a cube, but it hasn't been decided for certain. Width for aquascaping is very important to me.
This may seem strange, but I believe I am going to decide on lighting first, and then go from there. SPS is the only way for me... My fish room back home was climate controlled. Here, however, not many residences even have AC, and I am living in one that doesn't. 15K metal halide has always been my preference, but because of temperature issues I am very, very, concerned about using halides in an apartment with no AC. We don't have many scorchers, but it only takes one, and I would prefer being able to avoid a chiller purchase. LED seems to be a new craze, but I really am hesitant - given my limited knowledge - to use them. I am a little rusty, so any suggestions would be appreciated. I look forward to being among friends again, and hopefully can meet some Bay Area hobbyists. Thanks!
