New tank with regal

So I am looking into getting a new tank and really want a regal as well as a tank full of colorful active interesting fish. My choice was going to be a dsa 190, however after tiling my living room I realize I will be limited to space. So I guess my question would be would I be able to out a regal in a 48" long tank if so how many other "sweet" fish will I be able to fit in there. I wan to at least get 2 or 3 med size fish and the smaller groups.

How wide (front to back ) can you go with the tank? Most 55 Gallon tanks are 4" long and that would be too small. However, there are also some very wide tanks out there. Here is some info http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+18+422&pcatid=422

I was thinking maybe 27'' or so. I am open to suggestions because more than likely I will have to custom order the tank as I want the front panel to at least be starphire. Should make a decent fowlr
