New to area and reefing

I've been living in Waynesboro for a couple years now and since none of my co-workers ever want to hang out, I'm bored all the time. I thought, why not get an aquarium and that'll keep me occupied while I'm at home. The problem is I've put so many miles on my car going from one pathetic exuse for an lfs to another. I don't mind driving to Richmond or Roanoake( they're both the same distance), but if I'm going to travel somewhere I don't want to be dissapointed by the inventory, or lack of. I guess I'm spoiled my the one that my former roommates used in FL. Do you guys have places that you trust/recommend?

So far I've gotten what I'm told is a good deal on a flametail blennie, they thought it was a bi-color and sold it for twenty bucks. However that same store is getting 7 or 8 bucks apiece for green chromis. I have three red mushrooms from another store, but I only paid for two as one was in the process of splitting when I bought it. They were only four bucks each and each has it's own rock, it wasn't a group on a single rock. I figured it'd be an inexpensive way to get into corals. A chestnut turbo and two little hermits make up my current cuc.

I'm off every sat, sun, and mon, but I work nights so I sleep till noon. If anyone would be willing to get together, I'd love to pick some brains. Don't worry, I pick up things fast, but I do ask alot of questions.

Hi likwidglostix,

Well if you make the trip the only place in Roanoke would be Ultimate Aquarium. They used to be the best place around for high end corals. There are new owners and I have not been there for a while so I can not comment on the quality or quantity of their live stock. IMO if I had a choice I would go to Richmond, a lot more stores to choose from. Fish world and Atlantis are two I like to goto when I am in Richmond.
What are you looking for? If it is corals that you need then post what you would like there are always peolpe who have corals for free and for sale or trade on the board.
If you are ever down Moneta way you are welcome to stop by and take a look at my tanks and pick my brain or what is left of it.

Welcome to the area.

like ade said post what kind of stuff you are looking for, people are trading, selling and even giving away pieces all the time. A couple of guys have frag systems set up and you cant beat the prices in a store.
PAW in lynchburg is hit or miss on livestock, I have picked up some really good deals from time to time there, but don't get in there very often since my tanks have been overcrowded for a while. Just added a third system with a little expansion room now. Like ade said if you are heading toward Bedford, let me know you could stop buy I always like showing off the tanks and talking fish stuff.

Ditto the other posters. I'm not far from Jorge if you're in the area.

We are a somewhat far-flung group with most of us from Lynchburg through Roanoke to Blacksburg. Great opportunity for free/cheap frags if you hang out online or in person.

That's wierd, I hoped Roanoake would have almost as much as Richmond. I've been looking for an excuse to check out the city and dinner for one at the olive garden isn't gonna cut it. I guess checking out some advanced setups is gonna have to do. I promise I'll be impressed and make it a much more gratifying experience than when you show your normal friends. Hope to meet you all soon.

There are a bunch of people in the valley with reef tanks and fish only but it seems that there is not enough to keep more than one store open. We all trade with each other and try to help out each other as much as we can, but as far as buying local corals from LFS I would have to say that I look outside of Roanoke. You would think that LFS would try and grab what they can from RC group but nothing not even a 10% discount for club members. Throw a dog a bone. Who knows he might come back with another dog.
