I have been into photography for a few years. However, I feel like I am CLUELESS when it comes to photographing my tank. Where do I start? I have a 54 corner and I can't seem to focus on anything. :headwally:
Every time I try to shoot w/ my dslr I can't focus auto or manual. Maybe I should be using a different lens. Maybe I need to be closer or further away. Maybe I need a 5dmiii I dunno.
I have a 54 corner also. The bowfront screws you up. The curve in the glass creates too much distortion. It's really tough shooting with my macro unless something is really close to the glass. To shoot further in I use my 24-70. For the rest of the stuff, look at the stickys up top.

Thanks, yes, I sent you a PM before I saw you here. So do you have your best luck w/ your 24-70 pretty much wide open? I have a few primes and a crummy sigma macro. Do you always manual focus? I was reading in one of the sticky posts getting super close to the glass is key. Is that true for those of us that have bowed glass?
Pretty much. The corners are a little worse because there's more of a bow than the rectangles. Like I said, if the coral is a few inches from the front glass, it works ok, if it's further I use the 24-70. I use off camera flashes so I can still use a pretty quick shutter speed and still keep some DOF if I want it. I also don't like to use high ISO, as I think they look too bad, but that would help if you don't use a flash. Let me go take a shot or two.
That is pretty sharp Jesse. Guess it is time to learn how to use my flash off camera. Was that shot handheld? I don't have a steady hand AT ALL. Especially with my 24-70. That thing is a beast!
Yes, handheld. It could have been better with a tripod. You can see I moved and the focus point was a little behind the head. I do shoot manual also. What's your camera brand. I'm kinda guessing Nikon and yes, for a 24-70, the lens is a bit of a beast. I've thought of putting some extension tubes on the 70-200 and trying that, but haven't got around to it.
Yes, I noticed the focus was on the body. But those scales sure were sharp
I'm a Canon shooter. If I had it to do all over again I would have chosen Nikon hands down.
When I went to upgrade my body I had already invested too much in lenses to switch brands.
I now have the 5Dii and probably won't upgrade any time soon. I feel like I miss a ton of shots due to the focusing system but regardless, it is still an awesome full frame camera
