Hey all just thought I would drop a post introducing myself. Just got into the hobby about 2 months ago and having a blast with it. I will admit I have alot to learn. Would love to meet up with anyone around the waterloo / cf area to get some advice. Hope to get to know all of you real soon!

hey, welcome! There are a few of us in the area.

And they're all insane!!! Run! Run while you still can!!!

;)

Seriously though, good bunch of folks so far as I can tell but then I am a newbie myself.

Welcome and enjoy. I know I am.

Welcome, I am Secretary of the GIRS and am in Evansdale. Maybe you would like to tell us more about your tank or tanks. If theres anything you need don't hesitate to ask. I see your a business owner care to say what business?

My tank is a 75g, about 80 pounds of live rock, 80 pounds of sand, two tunze 6045's for powerheads, a tunze doc 9010 protein skimmer, lighting : 48 inch Current USA Outer Orbit HQI Metal Halide with T-5s & 150W HQI, and a canister filter. Being new to the hobby I was going off of my freshwater days for filtration and would of done a sump if I had it to do over. I will post some pics tonight.

Livestock: 1 bastard stripe damsel, 2 perc clowns, 1 bicolor blenny, 1 powder brown tang, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 coral banded shrimp (thought he died but it was just his skin he shed that i found in the powerhead) 1 chili coral, 1 green ricordea, 1 purple lookin ricordea, 1 yellow fiji leather.

Waverz: as far as what business I own, its dynamic communications, We are downtown waterloo ( and des moines ) Directv dealer.

Welcome glad you found us. I'm the Waterloo/CF area trustee for GIRS. There are quite a few of us in the area, and we are actually all pretty much insane! :D I'm actually up by Waverly but if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Between all of us that are around the area I'm sure someone could give you a hand with whatever you may have problem with!

Sounds like you have a pretty good start to a nice reef tank. I would prob. ditch the canister filter, most people only use them to run carbon, otherwise they'll end up being a nitrate factory and you'll start having problems. You can always add a sump/fuge on later if you want, it's not really that hard to do.

If you have any questions at all don't hesitate to ask! We're all here to help.

Might have to do some frag trading for some free movie channels on the ol' directv! ;)

Sounds like we have about the same tank setups, i have a 75 gallon and the same light. Sounds like you need more coral...if your interested in SPS i've gto a bunch to frag.

Welcome to Reefcentral. You have a pretty good support network in your local area.

One small suggestion though, go easy on stocking your tank. At two months your tank still needs some time to mature before your bio load gets too big. And yes I am aware of how easy it is to go to the fish store and come home with bags full of stuff, but just make sure to pace yourself. If you don't failure becomes easier and nothing is more discouraging in the hobby then to have things croak for no apparent reason.

Waverz: I would love to get some sps from you! If you got the time as well would be great to have someone show me how to frag corals.

Welcome to Reef Central and better yet, Welcome to GIRS. You're lucky enough to be right in one of Iowa's Reef Tank hot-beds.

I wish Cedar Rapids had as many active/visible reefers as the waterloo/CF area does!
