As a kid, I was more interested in the looks of mantids. Now, since I've done more reading (mostly here), it's not just looks, but personallity as well. I have a 55gal mixed tank now (started adding polyps about 5-6 months ago). The smallest fish I have is a damsel, which is about quarter size. I've read about the horror stories about mantids breaking tanks, even though it's rare.
I would like to get a mantis sometime this year.
Is there any one in particular that I should look at, being my first one. I have no problem rearranging my tanks aquascape to be more suitable for him. I've got the food propogation taken care of, since I already have a tank set up to raise brine shrimp (won't be hard to set up another for ghost shrimp/misys/silver sides).
