New to SW and need major help :)

I am completely new to saltwater, and need some help. I've had freshwater tanks for over 10 years with no prob, but I know this is a whole new ball game.
Last weekend I inherited a 55 gal saltwater tank. The move was not kind 3hr drive over mountain roads. I tried to save as much of her water that I could, but it ended up being only about 2/3 of it. The larger rock was left in the tank. Needless to say by the time it was home and set up, it had disasterous results. It was fine the first day and the fish seemed alright, but by the next morning, everything was dead, including the red worms that were in there.
I did put more water in the tank and used a chlorine remover for it. I called my aunt, she's on well water, so she never had a RO/DI. I have taken the tank completely down and the rock are all in buckets with saltwater in it.
I ordered a RO/DI unit from Filterguys, it should be here by the end of the week. I would like to set this tank up for fish, but I need some help getting it started. She did have a protein skimmer and a fluval 304 filter. What else will I need to start this over, and is the sand salvageable or should I buy new? I'm sorry for all the ?'s, but I really need help, as I am kinda lost at this point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Please be nice :), I've only had freshwater up until now lol.

Well, there is no better time to start over right. I would toss the sand and start fresh. Buy a quality aragonite sand like a Caribsea Aragamax product and you'll be fine. Make sure you have at least 1lb/gallon of live rock, a good skimmer, and at least 20x flow in the tank. The rock will serve as the biofilter. No need for any other filtration if you have enough rock. RO/DI is the only way to go for saltwater, imo. Good choice. ;)
