Hi Everyone!!

My name is Dave Natter, and I live in the Village of Schaghticoke. I am new to SW having some experience in FW approximately 10 years ago. Last night while looking though RC (I seem to be doing this alot lately!) I came across the Reef Club Forums and found CDMAS. As I mentioned, I am new to this and I am currently in the process of setting up tank, so please be gentile if I sound stupid in asking questions sometimes.

I currently have an AGA 90 gal Megaflow on the AGA stand. When I purchased this about 3 months ago, I had been planning on a FOWLR setup and purchased a simple hood which has 3x 48" 32 watt bulbs. Having spent some time reading through the forums here on RC, I am now leaning to a reef setup.

My planned equipment is as follows:

ASM G2 Skimmer
Eheim 1262 return pump
2x Tunze 6060 powerheads
Euro-fil 180 sump or possible a custom made sump with a refugium
Live Rock - Mix of Fiji (45lbs) and either Tonga Kaleini or Marshall Island (50-60 lbs)
Live Sand - Fine 100lbs

I do have some questions about equipment and lighting ( was giving some serious thought to the Solaris Led ) , but its 10/31 at 4:30 and I gotta take the kids Trick or Treating!

Look forward to being a part of this forum and CDMAS!

Thank you,

Dave

Welcome to the CDMAS Dave!

Welcome Dave. Glad you found us.

I'm a strong believe in refugiums on an alternate lighting schedule (not that you asked).

Also, 100 lbs. sounds like a lot of sand. You should probably gear towards 1" - 1.5" total depth including ~10 lbs. of LS to kick things off.

To CDMAS!

Dave, be sure to head over to CDMAS.org and fill out a membership application! :D
Here you go!

Welcome aboard. I just upgraded to a 90G AGA with megaflow and am very pleased with the ASM G3 skimmer - I would not go smaller than the G3.

You'll find lots of good debate on lighting. I am partial to T5s and will be adding the 6x54W Teklight within the next few weeks. I would hold off on the Solaris until the technology is really proven and the prices come down.

Ask lots of questions - people on the forum are very helpful.

Welcome. Nice to see another explosion of growth in the group. As you will be told read, read, and read. See you around

Thank you all for the warm welcomes!!!

Trick or Treating is over for the night aside from a few door bell rings, so time to get into it.

....ask lots of questions...

LOL, I will. Here's a few............

I looked at a few designs of sump/refugiums, and none seemed to catch my eye aside from what I saw on melevsreef.com. http://www.melevsreef.com/acrylics/sumps/g/sump_model_g.html The deminsions of this sump are too large, so this is what I came up with for a Sump/Refugium design. Just don't know where to get it fabricated. Others I have seen just don't seem to have enough sections for everything.

DavesSumpRefugium.jpg

Does this look like a good design? (anyone good with acrylic looking for a project?) Also, do you mean putting a timer on the light above the refugium? Lit when the tank isn't?

I used the the Sand Calc on RC 48" x 18" @ 2" depth calculated to 90lbs - Bags of LS are 20 lbs each, so 5 bags??

Already did before I made my 1st post here :)

Welcome aboard. I just upgraded to a 90G AGA with megaflow and am very pleased with the ASM G3 skimmer - I would not go smaller than the G3.

What stand do you have? The stand I purchased is from AGA. The interior height to the bottom of the tank is about 25". The G3 is also 25". I don't see how I could fit it. Is there another brand of skimmer that might be recommended that would perform like the G3, and would fit? I am guessing it would have to be about 21-22" tall. (The G2 is 21 1/4" tall)

LFS in the area

I would also like to start working with a LFS in the area, and possibly purchase some of my equipment there to get a good relationhsip established. I have had mixed feelings about some of the LFS in the area that I have visited. Although I won't mention names, I'm sure everyone here will know of the stores that I have visited as I note my experiences. This is my impression of these stores. Please let me know if my assessments seem fair of if I am passing judgement incorrectly.

There is the one in Latham. There seemed to be a lack of assistance there. I was in the store for about 20-25 min and walked around different areas looking at their merchandise. Not one person asked if I needed help. To me it also looked like there were a number of fish that weren't doing too well in their tanks. I don't think I will shop here.

There is the one in South Albany close to 787. They were very friendly and the person I talked with there was very helpful. We discussed some equipment, but soon realized that some of what I was looking for they could not obtain from their wholesaler. Their livestock looked very healthy, and I got a good feel from this store.

The third store I visited was in Scotia. I was there talking to the owner and one of his employees. I got mixed feelings about this store. They seemed very helpful and I like that. (I'm sure I will need help in the upcoming months) When I was discussing equipment, I mentioned the ASM G2 skimmer. They said that they never heard of that company. I found that weird since I see the name ASM everywhere not only on this forum, but at many online stores. I also mentioned the Solaris LED. This was something else they never heard of. When we talked about a sump, they recommended me to use a tank and silicone baffles which of course would work, and be less expensive. I appreciate them trying to save me some money, but when I ask about a $2,300 light fixture, I would think that they realize that I'm not overly concerned about that. I even stated that if the equipment is of good quality, I do not mind spending the money on it.

One more store I plan on visiting in the next few days which is located in New Lebanon, so no comments yet. Unfortunately they do not open till later in the afternoon, so I was unable to go there today.

I guess for my equipment, I am looking to purchase items that are proven to perform well and will last. Originally the powerheads I was looking at were going to cost $40 each. The Tunze will cost $140 each. I can accept this increase if I can ratonalize that the Tunze are better for my tank and will last longer and be better for my tanks inhabitants. The same goes for my other equipment. The Eheim 1262 is about $130. If there is a better performing, higher quality pump that others would recommend, be it more $ or less, then that is what I would purchase. I want a quality setup, not one in which parts are not reliable.

Whew, sorry for being soo long winded. Thanks for reading all this, and please post any comments about any of my ideas for my setup. I have been trying to hammer this stuff down for the past few weeks and would like to order/purchase my equipment within the next week. It seems that the more I look at things the more confused I become. Looking at an empty tank in my home office is rather boring, at this time cycling LR would be something!

If your referring to Swamp Bottom.....Tony is usually there around 12...just call ahead to be sure.

BTW Welcome!

I measured the inside height of my stand and found it to be roughly 26". I also measured the ASM G3 skimmer and it is about 23" tall (I had about 2 inches of clearance inside the stand and the skimmer was elevated roughly 1" off the bottom of the stand).

If you are planning on custom building your own sump, you may want to take a look at mine. The design is very similar to what you have shown (less the top cover) - the big difference is the size. My sump takes up the entire interior of the 90G stand so the walls of the stand actually lend quite a bit of support to the walls of the sump. I can't take credit for the design b/c I picked up the setup slightly used, but I like it a lot. It gives you a lot of space to work with and you can have a relatively large refugium.

I agree with Kevin. I run my ASM G3 in an AGA stand. I have enough clearance. ASM's require little room to take off the collection cup. Its a twist lock and lift.

Ok, I measured the height again. It is 26" to the bottom of the tank. Every place I look states that the G3 is 25" tall. Is less than 1" enough room to remove the collection cup? I would rather have the G3 if it would fit. I could also cut out part of the bottom of the stand so that the sump would sit directly on the floor. Would this ruin any of the integrity of the stand if i did this? I could probably gain 1 1/2-2" this way.

I would love to have a custom sump, but I know that I am not capable of building one out of acrylic. I think I may have to go with an AGA 30 gal (36x12x16) and I would have to put the baffles in my self. If I go this route, would I get glass cut and polished for me from a local glass shop, or would I be able to use acrylic which I could probably cut myself? Would silicone bond the acrylic to the glass and not fail later on? If I go with the AGA 30 gal, chances are it isn't coming out once the diaplay tank is full.

Also, in my sump design (intake left, return middle, refugium right) I have two questions. First, is this type of sump/refugium setup better than intake>refugium> return? With the refugium in the middle, wouldn' there be too much flow to through it? The second question is about plumbing. I have seen it done 2 ways. The 1st tees off the tank and with a ball valve allows the water to enter the intake and the refugium. The other is too tee off the return into the refugium. It would seem that 'cleaned' water going into the refugium would be the bettter of the two options, but I'm a noob and am unsure.

I want to get all my equipment ordered/purchased within the next week, so I have to make decisions soon.

Thanks

Dave

Other folks with ASM G3s should chime in, but my guess is that sites tend to specify 25" in height perhaps to account for removal of the cup. I think that is even overkill - I measured my G3 to be roughly 23" in height and I don't think you would need more than 0.25" to remove the cup (it is a simple twist and lock design). Based on the height available within your stand (26"), which is the same height as mine, you would not have any trouble with the G3. My sump is even elevated at least half an inch by a piece of insulating foam sitting on the bottom of the stand.

Relative to your plumbing question, I like the ability to control flow into both the skimmer section and the refugium section (where you want a lower flow rate) so there are two ball valves to control this. My refugium gets the "dirty" water and it seems to be working out very well. Since pictures are worth a thousand words, here are some to give you an idea of the plumbing...

This shows the skimmer side of the sump (note the ball valve to control flow)...

This one shows the refugium side (you can't see the ball valve in the picture but there is one right above where the picture is cut off) along with the return in the middle (another ball valve on return line)...

Hope this helps.

Yes, this does help. Thank you.

The design is very close to what i was thinking of. (Steals Kevin's sump...lol) How tall are the sides of your sump, and how tall are the dividers? (how the heck did u fit that in!!!)

I will probably use an AGA 30 gal (36x12x16) as my sump and silicone the partitions in place. This is a little narrower than I had wanted, but it should still work fine. I think I can fit it into the stand if I take the display tank off and go from the top. I will re-draw my sump design and post it later. I'll also set up the plumbing like you have it, distributing some of the 'dirty' water to the fuge at a lower flow rate.

Well that should finalize my equipment, the custom made sump/refugium, ASM G3 Skimmer, Eheim 1262 return pump, and 2x Tunze 6060 powerheads.

Live Rock Question of the day!!!!

I like the look of the Marshall Island LR. Has anyone ever ordered any of this stuff online? If not specifically Marshall Island, has anyone here ordered LR online and could recommend the website. Hopefully they will have the stuff I'm looking for also.

Should I set up my refugium in the beginning when I start to cure my LR, or after my tank has cycled?

Thanks,

Dave

P.S. Met David (reefD) and Paul over at Union today. Nice people & very helpful!! I'll be back there soon. Thanks for the help today David!!

Here's the new sump/fuge plan. I removed the intake section, and increased the width of the return section in the middle. Let me know what you guys think. I won't build it until I have my skimmer so I may be able to reduce the intake section an inch or so and increase the size of either the return section or the fuge section. If there is room, which one should I make larger?

Are the height of my dividing walls correct?

Thanks all,

Welcome, new member hope all goes good..., good luck

I saw some thing that said 100# of sand and that not a little for the tank iput 200 in my 90 and gave me a nice 4" of sand I think that works best in my opion, even now in my 180 i have 400++ of Live sand, and a nother 200+ in my basement in the rest of the system.

Another Idea i use, use a bigger return pump and u can save on the power head wich look bad in the tankl and add heat...........i personally like a Ex.Pump Iwaki, Flotec any of the pumps made for a return, not pressure rated ...

peace

mike

The 100lbs of LS should give me about a 2" sand bed, there would also be more in the fuge. Ive seen a few conflicting posts. Is 2" enough or should I strive for 4"?

I could go for a higher flow pump, but wouldnt it be restricted to put back only want can flow from the built in overflow? I belive that the flow from the AGA 90 is 800gph. ( I saw that number somewhere, just cant remember where lol ) The Eheim 1262 is rated at 900 gph, and on their chart a 4' delivery head will be about 800 gph which seems to match. Am I correct?

As for the powerheads, I've heard many good things about the Tunze. Would using 2x of their 6060's be TOO much flow? Some people have mentioned that it may be overkill, others have said it is fine. (It's crazy trying to filter through all of this and get it just right! lol)

Thanks for the help Mike!

Dave

You can remove the particle board bottom. Something i just did due to the fact that as time goes by any water will only cause it to bow:(

The particle board is just stapled down. Pries up easy.

My sump now sits directly on the floor. Before there was still enough room for the G3 and i have an All-glass stand. Same measurements.
