New to the area (Canton)

Hi, I just moved to Canton, OH and am trying to find a local or semi-local reef club.

I've been in the saltwater hobby for about 4 yrs, and am in the process of building my first reef. (Click the red house if you would like to take a peek).

Anyway, I've never been a part of a Reef Club, but my interest has grown so much this past year, and I would like to try and find some other enthusiasts around the area.

Thanks!

CORA ..it is a central Ohio reef club. bunch of smart guys down that way ,,, they can and will help you along , they meet one time per month down that way i think,
Murph

not toooooo many coral & fish places down that way ,,,but your half way to reef systems in the C-bus area, several NICE places in C-bus area , and not a bad drive to ole Salty Critter in Vermilion Ohio either ,,,,if theres a must visit place it would be Salty , Phishy, Reef systems

Welcome to Ohio, I live about 20 min north of Canton. Just starting reef myself so not much help as far as clubs and stuff. There are 2 lfs that are really nice. The closest to you would probably be Wet pet plus, a little further down the road is Coral Reefs. I personally prefer Coral reefs, prices is a little better than other places. But their selection is very limited, you should call ahead of time to see if he got new stuff in before going there. You should plan on going to the C-sea fragswap coming up next weekend. You probably know all this already, but thought I would comment in case you didn't.

Yeah there is basically no places at all to get saltwater stuff down here, and reef is pretty much unheard of. I was spoiled in my hometown and there were about 4 or 5 places, 2 of which that saltwater specialty stores within 10 miles of my house.

There is one place around here but they charge over 1-1/2 times what you can get the supplies for online. I wanted to get a bucket of Reef Crystals and they told me is was going to cost $85!!! I order it online for $38 w/ shipping and handling.

Anyway, Columbus is about 2-1/2 hours from me... so a little drive. Cleveland is around an hour, so I may have to check around there for some options.

Is there a listing anywhere of all the saltwater shops in Ohio?

Thanks for the response. :)

Thanks for the greeting. I'm not a huge fan of wet pets outside of picking up some food supplies, test kits, or an emergency pick up.

I've never heard of Coral Reefs though... where is it located?

I have heard some things about the Frag Swap... I've never attended one though. Is it something that is open to the public to attend, or do you have to bring stuff to swap and set up a table? Reason being... I'm building my reef, meaning, no corals yet :(

Swifty,

You/we are in a tough area for reefing. Our local options are Wet pets & Coral Reef. Coral Reef is on Killian Rd. in South Akron. Go N on US 77 exit Arlinton Rd. Go right on Arlington, about 1 mile the L on Killian. You want to call 1st. They do service and their hours can be a challenge. Next on the list is Two Turtles in Akron on N. Market. About 1 mile N. on downtown Akron. This is more of a Pet shop with some salt water.......Or, fill the tank and make the road trip.
1st stop is to see Hector in Brunswick at Tropical Aquarium About 45 minutes from Canton. 77 N to Rt 18 W to 71 N to Rt 303 W to Rt 42 S He's is on the right. 2nd is Aquatic Technology in Columbia Station. About an hour away. Last is Salty Critter in Vermillion about a hour & half away. Aquatic Tech & Salty Critter are the top two.

The local club is C-Sea Cleveland Saltwater Enthusiest Assoc. They meet monthly at the Cleveland Zoo. They have a frag swap coming up very soon.

Good Luck

No kidding, The Petco here recently went out of business also which made it even harder to get supplies.

Thanks for the locations, I may have to take a road trip this or next weekend.

As far as the Frag Swap... I asked earlier, but it might have been overlooked... Is it open to the public, and do people go who don't have frags to swap?

Swap is open to the public. It cost $5. It is in the Cleveland area so it would be a good time to check out the other stores too. i think it is next weekend. The link should have date, time, directions etc.

Welcome to Canton, AKA the sahara desert of reefing. C-Sea is your best bet, only an hour away and a bunch of nice people. Road trips are nice but be prepared for sticker shock. The frag swap is about the only way to get nice and affordable frags. Check out fragswapper dot com, they have like 25 pages of frags. I'm definitely going :)

Ha-ha... no kidding...

Yeah I think I'm gonna head up, but it's going to be rough though because I've only had water in my tank for 2 1/2 weeks, and my 55g stock tank lighting isn't strong enough to keep any frags.

All these recomendations are the best choices with a road trip involved. I've been to them all and found good things at them all. "Spread the wealth" as some would say!
When I first started I bought live rock from every where and it has made a great mixing of the soup plus you find different stuff at different places, compare prices, etc...
I'm by Youngstown and have one local guy (Girard) Professional Aquatics, Rick is a good small shop and can order anything in but I also do the road trip thingy when time and money permit.
Theres another guy close to you in Tallmadge, he's Jeff from Club Reef. (866-332-6725) He does tons of supplies sales on Ebay and used to have an awesome coral fraging and fish stock room in his basement also. I think he had some problems with heat in the summer down there the one year but still sells livestock and gets some corals. IF you look on Ebay you'll find his stuff just email him or try that number and see if he's got any livestock. I have bought some great corals and frags from him in the past.
I usually bring my trusty foam cooler and head out for the day, try to plan the stops in an efficent way and have at it, kids usually get dragged along. I also have a western PA route that takes me to Cranberry and down to Pittsburgh for a couple of good stores. MAke sure I have a couple of dvd's for the kids to watch and when they saw the alligator tank at Aqua World it made it all worth it!

I think I'm gonna head up to Salty Critter next Sunday, then hit up the frag swap (only like 30min apart). It looks like I may be able to pick up the rest of the supplies I need for my reef build there at costs comparable to online sites.

Also, I did some small renovating to my 55g tank, and installed a glass shelf for frags. This way if I see anything I like, I have somewhere to house it until my 90g is ready.
