New to the clam ranks(and loving it!!)

hi folks. i just got my first clam from a fellow RC member in PHX and i love it!! it is a pretty small squamosa. im not sure how to measure it, but it is about 3" from front to back. i have a 46g bow with a 250MH iwasaki and 180VHO supplement so i think i have plenty of lighting. i placed him high in the rockwork and when i came home, he repositioned himself perfectly in the sand. i am going to leave him there unless i start to see problems. anyway, my question is how often to feed DT's. i know that small clams rely on filter feeding rather than light so i want to get it enough food. currently i feed 5ml twice a week but the person i got it thru said to dose daily. i have several corals which are mostly softies and polyps. any other tips for a newbie to clams would be helpful as well.

thanks,

rich

ps: i will post a pic as soon as i get my digital camera back!!

If you look for it, there is a thread in this forum called "Some Excellent Reading" with links to articles on this subject. Should answer your questions.

thanks for the info, but i have read thru most of those articles and while they are informative, they do not have the experiences of the aquarists here and that is the info i am looking for. i understand that they do need plenty of nutrients fed to them but i would like some advice based on my particular tank specifications to HOW MUCH. should i dose DT's daily and how much is enough.

thanks,

rich

Personally I'd follow the directions on the bottle...at first. Then slowly ramp up the feeding until you reach a daily dose. At that point it might be a good idea to start culturing your own phytoplankton, because it could get costly depending on the size of your tank.
