SO my wife and I are going to get our cert. It is a program offered through the base here and is really really cheap. LOL However I was hoping for some advice on equipment. We live in the Puget Sound but want to take our diving to many tropical reef locations. I know that there will be different suits needed for the changing water temps, but what about the tanks and regs? Basically looking for general advice on where to get started.

Aaaaah! Your avatar is scary. :)

Don't worry - they'll go over all of that in class. :)

Rent gear as long as possible. All gear requires maintenance, and if you're maintaining more than you're diving, it's no fun. :)

Besides, that way, when you travel elsewhere, you'll be able to rent there and not have to fly with all of that gear, which may or may not be appropriate for that locale.

Yep, slow down... Focus on enjoying the cert first. :)

...And please put the gun down. :D (You're surrounded anyway, and if you shoot me, you'll be dead before you exhale.) :D

LOL thanks Seajay,

I guess it is just me to want to learn about things before I even go to the class so I have a better understanding of what is happening in it. LOL I really hate that new kid on the first day feeling ;)

Being eager to learn is great, though... It's a good thing to be. :D

You're gonna do great - and have a ball doing it. :)

Don't bring a weapon to class. :D

You'll never be the same. That's all I have to offer.
:-)

As far as the suits go it's basically thinner for tropical waters and thicker for cold waters. Equipment as mentioned above requires maintenance and unless you're a hardcore diver it's not really worth buying your own gear but there are exceptions. A wet suit, boots, fins along with a mask and snorkel are the basics any diver should have after all they are personal items.
