Just picked this up today. Actually went to buy Tunzes but saw this in operation and liked the lower profile. Unfortunately, I probably have to wait until next month to get the second one...
So far it looks to be wider. I agree that the optimal use would be as a pair. For now, my old pump mounted on the opposite side will have to pull its weight for now. However, if I need a surrogate tank...
I ended up going this route as I think there is a lot of potential for this unit. Ecotech is going to be releasing a controller early next year. I really wrestled with the Tunze as they are proven and true. However, they are so darn big in the tank.
The downside to the Vortec (to me) is that it's not pointable. 2 of those for the right and left walls and 2 tunzes in the back corners would be ideal, but then you need 2 controllers. Decisions, decisions!
I think they would be great to stick behind the rock work. Its hard to place a Tunze back there. I think this would be much better than a power hungry closed loop. Jeff, I'd like to come see them in action some time.
It really does move water and takes up significantly less space than a Tunze.
So far, less the 24hours into it, my only complaint is they are a bit touchy in setting up. Another drawback is they are not releasing a controller until next summer. However, it is compatible with a standard wave timer so I can live with it.
The cool thing is they can be adjusted down to 30%.
Unfortunately, the controller isn't out yet. It looks interesting though. I guess there was a prototype at MACNA. It'll be wireless and capable of controlling 10 units.
In the meantime, they can be used with a wavemaker.
