New Used 240

daveM100

What?
Found a glass 240g tank for $240. Checked it out when it was still up and running and everything seems fine. Still might reseal it to be on the safe side. I have a few questions before I start a build thread. Will more than likely be a mixed reef.

The tank is 96x24x24 and isn't drilled, I've drilled tanks before so no problem there. I want 10x's turnover so that's 2400gph correct? I want the overflow on one side panel, 3000 Overflow Box Complete Kit from Glass Holes rated up to 3000gph, will this work?

Return pump am looking at the Fluval Sea SP6 Aquarium Water Pump - 3434 GPH, not sure about in or out of the sump yet (100-120g sump, undecided). Will this pump work with running 2 x 3/4" sea swirls (or 1"?). Will also be running 2 x Gyre XF150 pumps on each end of the tank.

Thanks in advance for all help and advice .

no answers for you, but nice to see another ventura county person! good luck with the build. Sweet deal you got on the tank

Hey cool, right next door lol. Ya was going to go all out on a new tank but this frees up money for better equipment!

So I ended up with a neighbors 240g 96x24x24 that Ive helped maintain for the past 15 years, it has been freshwater the whole time. This thing is a beast and built like a tank. First seals are still perfect, and the second are near enough. LOL we even dropped one end of the thing when it was being moved all those years ago and added a 1/2 in thick 12x24 piece of glass to the bottom just in case. Even has corner braces which I like, no seams to look at. Took awhile to drain the thing and haul the 3 inch deep sand and gravel that was in it. Today we put it on furniture dollys and rolled it to my place. Going to pop the top brace off and reseal it then I can start my build.

Looks awesome. You gonna post pics when you get some rocks and water in? Interested to see how you do your sump or fuge

Going in wall, so the tank will be sitting in the garage with the face in the living room. I need to move my 100g thats on that wall in the living room, and move the 45 and 35 that i have set up on that wall in the garage. All that before i can start on the demo.

Was going to drill the original 240 I was going to get and add an overflow, but this tank i ended up with is all tempered lol, no drilling which kind off sucks. So I'm going with a Lifereef double overflow, at least it will be in the garage if there are ever any issues. Read good things about them so we'll see.

Ok, got some time to start my build which will be slowwww. The tank will be in wall, with it sitting in the garage/fish room and the front panel viewable from the tv room. The wall I'm working on now will hold my qt tanks/testing area/mixing station.

There is a 5 inch concrete riser that the garage wall sits on so I bolted the back 2x to the studs so I wouldn't have a gap and for added strength.

Back legs sitting on the riser.

Took a bit of thinking because building these types of structures is not my strong point. Top of the stand/bench.

Bottom shelf, back 2x resting on that riser.

Added the top plywood, which the big L cut for me.

Started on it and hopefully I'll get that finished and primed today.

This is what I'm using for the top coat, I hope this will work well.

LOL I'm lovin this Kreg jig, lookin for more things I can use it on. And the plugs make it look like there is nothing holding the work together.

Mixing station stand is almost finished, just need to tear the old station down and move my barrels over, prime and paint. Also going to add a couple of angled braces to the outside 2x4's to be on the safe side.

Ok decided to buy a new 240g tank instead of using this old guy, and use the old tank as my sump. So 240 display and 240 sump with a large fuge. Question, would 1/2 inch glass be to thick to use for the baffles? Going to be alot of flow through it and I think 1/4" will not hold up. And I think I'll use 3/4" glass to section off the fuge, just to be on the safe side. The stand is going to be about 42" high, so it should give me plenty of space to work in the sump.

The baffles are not holding in the sides of the vessel from the pressure of the water's weight, so there is no reason not to use 1/4" for them.

Hmmm, that's true Dave, I think I had the fuge section on my mind while I was typing this. The fuge will hold about 100-120g and the tank is 1/2" glass, so I figured I'd use 3/4" to wall that section off and brace it for peace of mind. The skimmer section will hold 9" of water, I don't trust 1/4" for that so I'll use 1/2". But yes for the actual baffles, 1/4" should work fine.
