hello, about 4 days ago i added a small yellow tang to my 30 gallon reef. it has gotten along with my other fish (percula clown, blue and yellow damsel, orange spotted watchman goby). i don't know if I'm just overly worried, as this is my first tang, but he looks to have small little golden spots near his gills. is this ich or is it just part of the fish? i put him in a QT tank for 3 days b4 adding him to my D tank and he did fine. he is also showing symptoms of icy. (brushing up against rocks and twitching) am i just being pesi-mystic or could this be ich)

my water parameters are normal

The "golden spots" are worrisome, as this could be Velvet (much worse than Ich). Post pics if you can.

P.S. The tang police are coming! :D

i am working on getting a good picture of the fish (he hides alot and is fast). what are some of the symptoms of velvet?

All fish must go through at least a 8week qt and 90days is recommended . If not you will eventually get a wipe out. You have Already jepordized the fish in the Dt. Qt. All your fish. If the tang is flagging or scratching. He has parasites On the gills

thankyou for the advice. i moved the tang back to the QT tank, i currently do not have any velvet treatment (do you have any recommendations) from my research i read that sachem Cupramine is very effective in treating ich and velvet.

yes I agree you must always quarantine your new fish for at least 90 days if not you are risking a big disaster in your display tank

Identical to Ich (scratching/flashing), except you'll usually see tiny gold-colored dots (vs. white dots for Ich). Also, with Velvet you have to act fast or fish start dying. Cupramine is your best treatment option.

Yes. And the fallow period for Velvet is 6 weeks (I believe). However, unless you are 100% sure this is Velvet (and not Ich) I would leave your 30 gal DT fallow for 10 weeks just to be safe.
