WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO finally i qualify for a LARGE tank.

after having a overheating disaster last week and loosing some fish and corals. i got mea angry with fish and broke down my system. buuut then went and got a 48x36x21" tank.

so far i have the stand built and bolted to the wall. all using 3x2" wood. ive got a plywood top on there.

equipment list :

- Arcadia series 4 : 250w mh
- Turboflotor skimmer
- Aquamedic ATO
- Aquamedic temp controller
- Tunze Stream 6060
- OR6500 for closed loop
- OR3500 for sump return pump
- Interpet compact T5 55wt sump light
-
set up will be simple-(ish :P ) overflow/wier is going to take up the far end of the tank. 5" this way i can fit 2 x durso standpipes and a tunzo 6060 hidden from open view. then at the other end of the tank i will have 2x returns for the sump, and 2 x returns for the closed loop. NOT sure where to put the closed loop strainer yet. probs close to the weir so its covered by rocks. but im worried fish will get sucked up as the 6500 is gna suck a bit :P not sure what else to say. im useing my old 39 x 12 x 18 ( i think ) for a sump for now .

hopefull stock list :

- 2 cleaner shrimp ( big ones )
- 2 yellow tang ( juvi )
- 12 blue/green chromis
- 2 black/white clowns
- royal gramma
- lots of red legged hermits
- 2 sand sifting starfish
- large selection of snails, turbo/conch/ etc etc

coral : mostly hard with some other stuff... some torch corals etc etc :)

I could be wrong but that stand looks severely underbuilt. tank is cool i would love an open top braceless tank

ya I would be scared to sit on that stand let alone sit 2,000 pounds on top of it. Maybe it will be fine since its bolted to the wall but I wouldn't risk it.

My exact first thought when looking at the pics. Many stands for much smaller tanks have twice as much lumber. Don't skimp on the stand. Overbuild if necessary. The alternative could be disasterous!

Keep in mind that most stands though are waaaay overbuilt. At a glance the stand looks like it would hold up ok to a vertical load. However, I would be very concerned that a jolt from either side could shift the top of the stand/tank to either the left or right and cause it to collapse. I would include some brackets or diagonal cross bracing to firm up.

cross bracing goes in tomorrow. mebe 2 more uprights. well see. i had 10 ppl stand on the stand today. and it didnt move. so we should be safe. haha

I would also put a sheet of plywood across the top of the stand. It will help with shifting and disperse the load of the water.

yeh already got the plywood cut for the top. waiting for it to go on. had a rather hefty shoping list arrive yesterday :)

Congrats. the tank looks great. I love those dimensions it's made me rethink my 200. Do you have any more plans for fish?

aii heres my final stock list ( but no doubt it will change a bit )

2x b/w clown
1x bi-colour blenny
12x blue/green chomis
1x flame angel
1x juvi yellow tang
2x purple fire-fish
1x royal gramma

and yeh the dimensions are awesome. i love the shallow look. is great. heres a kit list if anyone is interested :

aquamedic turbo flotor skimmer
arcadia series 4 250mh unit
rio 2500 return pump
aquamedic OR6500 for closed loop
Tunze 6060
aquamedic temp controle unit
aquamedic A.T.O

soon to come : deltec calcium reactor, proflux computer, and another arcadia series 4 unit, but this time 4 foot long and twin 150's

I'm sure there's room for just 1 more tang. :D What is the volume of the display tank on its own?

urm, i think it works out at : ( looks on net ) 150 uk gallons + a 40 gallon sump. so not to bad :) ive been tempted to add 2 x yellow tangs... im going to keep clear of powder blue as they tend to be a ICH magnet. so not going there. any ideas as to other fish ??

Purple Tang might be nice. A little hard to get hold of but if you need I can point you in the right direction for one. A Chevron might be a good addition, again a little hard to get hold of but I know a place :). CBB Would be nice too IMO. Or a nice school of Anthias.

cbb ?? anthiah have crossed my mind but £17 a shot isnt cheap. and as for purple tangs. some people say there aggressive ??

any experiances

decided against coperband. heard to many stories of them not eating and stuff.

Maybe that's for the best. If you can find one eating though, they're a brilliant fish.
