Newb with a new tank!

Hello there reefers...

In the past I've had fresh tanks and always wanted a salt reef tank and here I am!

The end of Oct. I purchased a 26g tank set up with 20lbs of love sand and about 22lbs of live rock and stuck it in my sons room, and he's lovin it!! Everything cycled nicely and a couple weeks later I dropped in a cuc and on Black Friday I picked up a cleaner shrimp and a couple Nemo's.

Tank is doing great right now, signs of coraline are starting to show, my cleaner shrimp molted for the 2nd time today and is getting big, and have noticed LOTS of little critters running around at night... So far all of them good ones. We did have a couple snail fatalities but not due to tank conditions. One of the turbos flipped over and didn't catch him in time and another committed suicide and wanted tried to be a carpet snail, didn't work out for him.

So here's where the questions come in!

A couple days ago I came across a pretty good deal on a bigger tank. It's an acrylic 75g corner overflow tank, stand, canopy, and what looks like a 20g sump, skimmer and a Tupperware container full of rock.

It's gonna be some time before I get it started so im gonna polish out the scratches and probably re finish the stand.

Can anybody identify this skimmer? There arent any markings on it.
Is this sump big enough to stack with rocks and keep my tank clean?

I'm also planning on a brs reactor for carbon and gfo, Eheim 1260 for a return, haven't decided on power heads yet, a reef breeders photon 48 for lighting.

Comments? Suggestions??

Down the road your probably going to want a bigger sump. I have a 20g long sump for my 75g rimless, and already wishing I got something bigger. For the right price I would get it. You'd have something nice to upgrade to when ready and would definitely save some money in the long run buying a tank, stand, canopy, etc. As far as the skimmer goes, I can't tell exactly what it is. I'd probably get a new one but that's just me.

Coo deal, I already bought the tank. For $175 I thought it was a pretty good deal.

After looking over the sump a little bit it seams like almost a waste of a sump really... The 2nd chamber only holds about 4-6" of water, so out of a 20g sump it looks like it holds maybe half that in water.

I may either try and re design it or get like a cheap 30 gal tank and make my own. I don't wanna start it and not be happy with the results

Sumps are pretty easy to make. Definitely do it the way you want. Nothing worse than after everything is going, then kicking yourself in the arse for not doing the way you wanted. Good luck

That's actually a pretty good deal! and yeah I would probably pick up a close to the biggest sump you can fit in your stand. You want to keep in mind things you might add later down the road. Do some research on sump designs and see what suits you best!

Ohhh wow it's rimless. May I be the first to tell you, take the top off and leave it off. Rimless=canopyless. I know it's not a word. Lol

Yeah it's a acrylic 75g SeaClear tank, stand and canopy are made of hard wood. Not a bad setup. I Was planning on ditching the canopy but was gonna use it as a test dummy to decide how I as gonna finish the stand. But not sure how the wifey is gonna like a big light hanging over it.... I'm crossing my fingers!

I filled it with water and it looks pretty good but I want it to sparkle so I've got some work to do first.

New skimmer just got added to my Christmas list, hopefully santa doesn't cheap out on me this year!!

Haha It seems the older you get the cheaper santa is. But yhea if i had rimless it would be naked. You can set up a nice led hanger so it looks good just check out some pics online to get an idea.

Ohh believe me I've been lookin. Convincing the wife is the main problem, my 2nd issue is I have 12ft high ceilings so it might be pushing It.

I would also go canopyless. At least you could try it out. I recently set up a deep blue professional 75g rimless and I love it lol. And buying it gently used I saved $400+
