Newcomer looking for Reef Club!

Hi everyone, I am in the Air Force at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. I will be coming to Tucson in the middle of July. I have been in the reef hobby for about 1.5 years and i recently just bought a 240 gallon tank to take with me. I will be looking to join a reef club out there as well as help setting up my new system. I have had to sell all of my livestock to make the move so I will be looking for lots of live rock when I get out there. I plan on having a huge system, consisting of over 500 gallons. I want to have make a fish room to hold all of my sumps and equipment. I can't wait to join another reef club!

Welcome to Tucson! (in july)

You shouldn't have any problems populating your tank out here, and there are a lot of people that will help out any way they can with setup and anything else you need.

What we don't have is an organized "club". There have been some discussions about it over the last few years. There have been a few tries, but it never really materializes. That doesn't change the fact that there are great reefers in Tucson that will help with anything you need. There are auctions and get-togethers from time to time, and every time it happens, it's a great time had by all. :)

This forum is a little slow because of that, but I gaurentee that if you post something, it will get read and replied to accordingly. :)

Moving To Tucson

Thank you for the replies, I belong to two clubs in the Hampton Roads area. They are both on this site as well as their own webpages. We just had Anthony Calfo as a guest speaker!! We are not huge just about 50 people or so each. I can't wait to get out there and start setting up my tank. I have all the equipment already for it. If you would like help starting an organized reef club let me know. Having an organized club does have great benefits. I will be posting on this site alot and can't wait to meet you guys!!

Hey do you already have a house? Or will you be living on base? If you are on base I could totally help you set up your tank, as I have base access. Good Luck moving a 240g. tank across the nation lol!

No I don't already have a house, and I probably won't be living on base. If you could tell me which areas are nice to buy a home or build a home that would be great. I have been thinking about the sahuarita area, how is that? Luckily the Air Force is moving me so I don't have to worry about moving the tank.

By the way here are some specs on the new setup: 240 Gallon 96" long 24" wide and 24" tall. Closed loop. 3 X 400 watt Icecap Halides and 1 250 Watt Icecap halide. 4 VHO Actinic on Icecap 660 ballast. 2 100 gallon tubs for sump and refugium. 2 X Tunze 6100 with Tunze Multi Controller. MRC-3R skimmer, MRC Dual Chamber Calcium Reactor. I plan on setting up an automatic top off, also an Aquarium controller, and then I should be all set up.

wow nice setup 100 gal sump and seperate 100gal fuge, wow! I live closer to tucson, not a fan of the sahurita area, I know SahuritaMike lives there, so he could better tell you about that area. I personally live kindof, east/central Tucson, There are many homes for sale in the are most of which are older, but are going IMO for way way less. Infact there are 3 houses on my street for sale. (id be cool to have a reefer on my street lol) anyways.

PS what are you going to do with your 125 set up?

I have already sold everything except the 125 tank itself which I will probably bring with me. Yes I am going to have a seperate 100 Gallon fuge and a 100 gallon sump and may use the 125 as well as maybe a frag/grow out or another sump. I would love to live on the same street as a fellow reefer! I don't want to be too much of a hassle but could you possibly take some pics of those houses and send them to me? I might be coming there for a couple of days to check some places before July. Thanks!!

Wow talk about a gigantic system. lol! Sure I will PM them to you. What type of house were you looking for, # bed/bath, SQ ft. Anything Special? (pool, etc.)

There are not many (used, dont know of a different way of putting it) that are 2 story, but KB homes has a few, that are just being built in my area. Will get some links out to you!

Fitchguy,I don't think we have ever met,but I am living in Norfolk, and hope to be moving to Northern Arizona in the next two months.I will be bringing my 90gal with me,but not the livestock.I talked with Jeff yesterday, and he might be able to hold some stuff for me.I hope it will work out because I have some nice stuff I want to keep.I just hope he does'nt get too busy with the new store to send the stuff to me when I am ready.I also know there are some clubs in and around the Phoenix area.

fitchguy, sahuarita is great i live in rancho sahuarita, it has a water park with 4 pools 1 has 3 slides the other is a lap and 2 kiddy pools, it also has a nice gym, and a 10acre lake that is stocked every 2 weeks. the are opening a kids club area next month that will have classes for kids and other stuff also a mini golf course and stuff i cant think of right now. there are a ton of houses for sale and for rent in here.

Fitch, I am still a struggling reefer myself to get things going with my tanks so i don't have much help I can give you there but my wife is a REALTOR with GMAC so she could represent you on your buying of a house if you don't already have one. I am sure she could offer you smaller service fees than other REALTORS.

Welcome to Tucson! Rita Ranch has a lot of 2 story houses for sale and rent and some new subdivisions. I'm setting up my 300 and I believe I have too much rock, so I could probably help you out with that.

Well it looks like I will be buying a home in Rancho Sahuarita. We loved the community there, it was awesome. I can't wait to be there and I already miss having my 125 gallon tank setup. So Musicbabe, that would be awesome if you could help out with that. I will be collecting rock and holding them in one of two 100 gallon brute stock tanks while I set up my new system.
I will be needing help on ideas for plumbing my new system, and also, does anyone there drill tanks?? Thanks!!
