July Meeting:

I want to host soon but I'm trying to re-carpet my house, plus re-paint my "beach/ocean wall" and the hole I cut into that wall from my 300. I'm on the edge of financially being able to do both so I'm not going to commit until both are complete. I can host, but there's not much to look at other than scars in the walls and my new 30G tank that's being run over by hair algae.

Anyone up to hosting for our July meeting?

Another thing is we had going on is a sushi night. Not to hi-jack my own thread :uzi: but that was fun as heck. Plus sushi! Any interest into reviving this?

I'm in for Sushi... I can't go this Tuesday... But probably one in the next two or three weeks will be fine... I have to work on expanding my stomach... You know Kobayashi's record was broken... I think Art might be up for the challenge... :D

Matt mentioned something about the CR hosting sometime this summer... Not sure if they're up for doing it in July or not???

I'm in for sushi:)

We would also be glad to host another meeting as well. Probably not July though as I will have things a bit out of place making some changes with the tanks. Maybe August (if the frag swap never gets going) or over Christmas break sometime.

Good news!

I talked to Rob and Chris at the Coral Reef today and they have agreed to host the July meeting if we like.
If we feel we need more time to advertise we can always put it off a little longer but I though this would be a good time.
If anyone is good at making flyers LMK or I can do if no one else wants to. We would need one for the store and possibly other places as well.......ideas?
They will also have major discounts on livestock and possibly other items for paid members during the meeting. Some other benefits for members might be forthcoming as well in addition to the 10% off you receive which is worth it in itself.
I suggest we also have a coral fragging demonstration to try and get a few more people out to the meeting. Maybe the club could buy a coral and have them order it or maybe someone would be willing to donate a colony. I might be willing to let one of mine go if no other alternatives present themselves.
Rob is basically willing to shut the store down to let us have a meeting but I suggested possibly doing it on a Sunday evening starting at closing time (6:00 I think) so they wouldn't loose any normal business hours.
They are very open to the idea and just want us to let them know what they could do. I think this might be a great opportunity to get some new members interested and to help out the Coral Reef with a little summer business:)
Plus we could meet up for Sushi beforehand.

LMK what yall think.

thanks, Chris

Sounds good to me... I'm not sure where else we'd post flyers??? Maybe PetSmart or Pet Supplies Plus... We all know the Aquarium wouldn't be for it...

We usually do Sushi on Tuesday nights, because theres an all you can eat place... But really I'm game for sushi anytime... Its been a month or so since I've been able to partake... Oh scratch that... I had some on the honeymoon... :)

Great...any more comments? I kinda figured this was one of the things we were shooting for. Of course maybe I replaced I with we like I do with my wife sometimes:rolleyes:

thanks, Chris

A meeting at the Coral Reef sounds good. Perhaps we can get a few of us to chip in a buy a coral there for the fragging demonstation (with those paying taking a frag home).

Sunday evening would be doable, but I'd rather do a Friday or Saturday night after closing.

Thanks guys.
My idea about the fragging was that the club would pay and everyone that was a member and present would get a piece. Kinda using the club funds to get new members and make more club funds:)
That typically will get more new members signed up.
The idea is mainly to encourage newer reefers that don't have many corals to show up. Paying $24 to join the club and immmediately getting more than that much value with a coral or two is hard to turn down:)
A branching LPS would be easy or SPS is the easiest (although most people won't want an SPS coral, including myself because I have too many already).....maybe some zoas or maybe some zoas and an LPS pf some sort. If we get them wholesale both would probably cost less than $100. I will also bring a few pieces of purple edged cap I need to get out of my tank for those that maybe want to try an easy SPS coral and we can demonstrate mounting those. We could also demonstrate dipping before we bagged them up.

I don't know what time they close on Friday and Saturday but I was thinking it was 8 and that's a little too late to start a meeting IMO. They are open to shutting down the store early to let us have the meeting but I don't know if we want them to loose any additional buisness they might get at that time. That's basically the reasoning behind Sunday night.

thanks, Chris

I thought they closed at 7??? But no matter... If its Sunday, Ashley can come to the meeting... :D But Friday or Saturday would work for me too...

I'd vote for using the club funds for this type of purchase... I think its a wise investment... If we have 4 new members join, it would have paid for itself, and even if we don't, any member that wants a piece will get one... :D

Chris, you can use WE... Because this is along the lines of which direction I was thinking the club should take... So you and I would qualify as we... lol :D Seriously though, thanks for taking the intitiative... ;)

:)

7:00 on a Friday or Saturday works for me also if that's what the majority want's to do. I know some people go to church on Sunday nights and I have bible study.
We probably need to decide fairly quick though so I can make a flyer at least to put up at CR.
I can start a thread to vote on a meeting time and I can also start a thread with the Coral Reef meeting headline to attract some people that view the forum if those are ok with everyone.

thanks, Chris

Perhaps somebody should start a poll for the time. I would vote in order for Friday, then Saturday, then Sunday. Fragging a branching LPS and a Zoanthid colony would be a good idea (and has my vote for club funds) -- especially since I have some room for a little of both. :D

OK I posted a poll. It will be open for 2 days. I talked to Chris and he said Friday was much better than Saturday to close early so it's Friday or Sunday and if it's Friday it will start at 6 instead of 7.
Chris said they would be happy to order us a couple of corals.
One will be a zoanthid colony 3" - 5"...the best grade which usually ends up being some variation with orange and/or green and/or blue etc....in it. He said our price would be $60.
I am stumped on the second one. A branching euphylia etc for that price would only have ~ 6 heads and that's not enough. I thought about a Favid of some sort and someone bringing a dremel....or maybe an Acan. Not sure if we want to do all that but it would be informative for people like me that haven't cut up a coral like that.....maybe Randy or Dave could help with that one.
Anyhoo I've gotten things started. We have a little over 4 weeks so we have plenty of time to get the word out. I will post a meeting thread and post a flyer at the Coral Reef when the poll expires.
Any and all ideas are welcome.
thanks, Chris

I have a tile saw that would work fine so long as its not too thick... I might be picking up a RotoZip in the near future, so that might be an option as well... Unless someone already has one they could bring???
