NFP meds?

What's everyone's take on National Fish Pharmacy meds?

I wasn't impressed with there Chloroquine Phosphate, heard good things about CP but I used there CP and it did nothing for me.

Also, first time recently using there ERYTHROMYCIN Powder, it has done very very little to help the Popeye in the mitratus I've had in QT, it's now 5 days into treatment. It's improved slightly, but seems like it's worse today.

The major issue I'm having however, how do you use these meds and keep ammonia down? It has to be black magic? I had a fully cycled QT tank, 20 gallon, and now I'm trying like mad to keep ammonia down, doing 5 gallon water changes daily, and it's still at .025 ammonia

I've given up with the ERYTHROMYCIN now, I added carbon and going to do a 8 gallon water change in the morning, at this point it's more important to get the water quality back.

Question:
Did I make the right call to give up the treatment at day 5 (package says 10) in order to try to get the water quality back to normal?

What's your experience with NFP?

Anything I'm doing wrong?

I've used a lot of NFP Products: Nitrofuracin Green, Copper Sulfate, Chloroquine Phosphate, and many others.

I find the nitro very effective on bacterial infections and damaged fish.

I dilute the Copper and use it on a 4,000 gallon fish system. Very very potent and easy to overdose. When set properly and regularly checked with a calorometer, it is very effective.

The CP is a crapshoot. Treats protozoans quickly and effectively, but seems to leave the water very yellow after treatment.

Pure CP will not cloud or change the color of your water. There have been many, many comments/ posts about the quality of the chloroquine sold by them. For some it doesn't work, but when CP is used from a different source, in the same hands, it was very effective. I believe they buy their products from China using the alibaba site. You could do the same for cheaper if you want questionable product.

Why does all there meds totally wipe out my beneficial bacteria? How can I use the meds and keep ammonia down?

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Broad spectrum antibiotics will effect your biological filtration directly. Chloroquine will kill algae in your tank. As it decays, it could cause a delayed spike in ammonia, though it should not be an issue in a qt tank.

It is not their meds, but a side effect of the meds.

Does anyone know the best source of chloroquine? Which Chem manuf??

Best bet is to have a vet write you a script from a pharmacy. That way you can ensure the purity. Just make sure the script specifies the crystalline salt form and not tablets.
