Night Pics w/ a Red Light

I am trying to take some pictures of some hitchers at night with a red light. The problem is that it is so dark I can't get a clear shot. I want to ID some things. Any suggestions on night photography without tank lights?

Use flash?

You will have to try and catch them off gaurd you will only have one chance after the flash goes off they will be gone.

wouldn't you get a huge glare from the flash?

That's what I was thinking. I'm going to try it tonight and see.

Well I tried using a flash and it worked surprisingly well. No glare, and the worm I was trying to take a picture of didn't even get scared away. I was able to take it's picture twice. The photo's nothing great, but enough to get an ID off.

If you're lens up against the glass the flash shouldn't be a problem.
