nikon 3100 settings help please

You really need to provide a lot more information. To start with, what specifically are you shooting? Also, are you using flash? Even with this, exact settings are going to depend on a lot of circumstances we can't accurately predict unless we're right there with you taking the shot. If you don't already have a firm grasp on the relationship between aperture, ISO and shutter speed in relation to exposure as well as the relationship of aperture and focal length to depth of field, that's where you're going to want to start. From there, we can give you some good general guidance for aquarium photography.

thanks for the reply, i have no clue really with all of that what you just mentioned. i normally just shoot in auto mode but want to start taking better shots. i was hoping for a general setting so i can branch out from there if you know what i mean. i want to take close ups of corals and fish pretty much.
thanks

Theres a lot of info in the Nikon manual that came with your camera. Youtube will keep you busy for a while too. A great way to transition from auto to manual mode is to just take a bunch of pictures on auto mode. View them on your computer and select the photos that really came out excellent. Right click on the image and select PROPERTIES. in the properties menu, select DETAILS. You can view all the settings your camera automaticaly used to aquire the photo. Study these details and learn from them.... shutter speed, aperture and ISO are the "big 3" A correct ballance between these 3 settings is what every quality photograph has in common.

I find myself shooting in Aperture Priority 75% of the time. Manual Mode 15% and a variety of settings for the remainong 10%

Title: Understanding Exposure

Just do it.

This book is a very good starting point. If you don't have a firm grasp on the basics for using aperture, ISO and shutter speed to attain a correct exposure, you're going to be much better served with a book like this than trying to learn it on an online forum (especially one not dedicated to photography). Aquarium photography certainly has its own unique challenges, but the basics are the same for all types of photography. Another great resource as far as online forums go is Photography on the Net.
