Nikon D50

It's a great camera, esp. if you can find one for sale...

macros and multi-use are more dependant on the lenses you put on the d50 than the body itself.

ok, I decided to go with the D40X. anyone have recommendations for a good macro lens? What should I look for? this is my first non-point and click digital.

Make this your first purchase! If this is your first dSLR, then you will find that book to be a wealth of knowledge.

Second, read through your owner's manual while you wait for Thom's book to show up.

Finally, a good macro lens would be Nikkor's 105mm AF-D 2.8 (older model) or the new 105mm AF-S VR 2.8. Those run around 600-750.00 US. For a cheaper lens, try Sigma's 105mm f2.8 or Tokina's 100mm f2.8. All are 1:1 macros.

I'd buy mine from either bhphoto.com or 17photo.com. 17 usually has a little cheaper price but is more expensive on shipping, so check both sites to see which is cheaper.

And if you want a multi-purpose lens that can do some close up as well as other things, try the Nikkor 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 AF. It's macro function is quite good (but is 1:2).

Remember that, as with the D40, the D40X doesn't have a built-in focus drive motor which means it can auto focus only with lenses which have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses). If you want the lens to auto focus for you, make certain to check if it is compatible with the D40X. Otherwise you can still use the lens but ONLY in manual focus mode.

Fortunately I think there are at least 12 or 13 Nikon lenses that are AF-S or AF-I that will allow you to do just about anything you want.
