Nitra Guard Bio Cubes reactor - help

I'm attempting to build a reactor for the nitra guard cubes. I've built a prototype that, well, doesn't work. The feed pump is an old school MJ400 and the venturi attachment doesn't work at 8" depth on the output side. If I inject air into the intake, I'm afraid of creating micro bubbles and turning the reactor into a second skimmer that I'll have to clean. So... What makes sense? Get a smaller pump like a rio 50 and put a simple air stone in the reactor to create the bubbles?

Throw some thoughts at me. I don't want to use the bomb method because it just screams salt creep city to me.
