Nitrate Filter reduces 25-30ppm a week.

No, but...

Important Warning: After the denitrator is setup and running; DO NOT completely open the outflow valve for more than a few seconds. Again, do not drain the contents of the denitrator back into the tank after the denitrator has been running for a while. This can result in a release of water into the tank before it has had a chance to be aerated.

This seems like a dire warning about such an innocuous event. Some denitrators that require feeding (like this one apparently does, with its EZ Feed opening) can release deadly hydrogen sulfide gas. Do some more digging before you buy IMO.

I just dose vodka, it's cheaper and easier than any of the other solutions. Plenty of info on RC on the subject.

I have read you and Andy write back and forth about Vodka. Are your nitrates in check? I might do a DSB in a bucket. I requested info on that from someone who is doing it succesfully.

Remote DSB's work well, just as they do in the tank . The reason they are done remote (5gal buckets per say) is because you can keep the sand clean and/or they are easy to replace if it does get packed with junk. I had a DSB in my sump and am setting up a R/DSB on my new tank since the DSB in the sump got jam packed full of junk.

The key to success in a RDSB as I understand it is a combination of a) depth of the sand and b) surface area. A 5 gal bucket might not have enough surface area to achieve the results. Also you're supposed to keep it from accumulating debris, which means more maintenance.

The RDSB is usually a great solution, including in the 5g bucket for most tank sizes, I would imagine it to keep up with my 120g SPS tank if I ended up putting one in.

The Midwest Sulfur Denitrators are great for removing nitrate as well as adding calcium. Stevem in the club has one on his 125 for his freakin foot long Vlamingi Tang. It works like a charm, keeps the nitrates down, and replaces TONS of calcium into his tank. He just has to keep the alkalinity balanced manually. He has really great things to say about the denitrator though. I've heard most of the sulfur based ones are very good.

RDSB is easy and cheap, just use a 5g bucket, 2 bulkheads, a few inches between the sand level and the inlet/outlet, and keep the flow high.

You don't siphon from the RDSB, you just keep the water flow high, or use a spray-bar to keep detritus from accumulated.

Make sure to keep a lid on it so algae doesn't colonize there.

Hehe in 17 days I'll be able to legally dose vodka :)
