noise comparison

I am a noise fanatic and I'm deciding on getting 2 new tunze because they are so quiet...but lately I've been reading up on these Vortech pumps...are they just as silent as the Tunze pumps? Noise or any sound is a big issue for me as the tank is 1ft away from me in my living room and I managed to get the hole tank completely silent...example: return pump is a T-4 and the hole tank enclosure is sound proofed and so on....

I have only had tunze which I run now in my 180. I can tell you these are very quiet. the only sound I really hear on my tank is my fans. I can't speak for the vortech pumps but I have heard they are a bit loud.

I have 2 vortecs and do love them, however they are on the outside of the tank and you hear a 'whirr'. Granted the overflow is louder, but the 'whir' can be heard from 6' away depending on how loud your vortec is.

I agree with CookieJar. I had Tunzes before...sold them and bought two WWD's. I love the WWD's, but you do have to consider that you will hear the motor as it is on the outside of the tank. Overall the noise is not bad at all. Of course, the more juice you give them, the louder the "whir" will be.

also if you pulse them you will hear more noise...i think it is worth it but because they are alternating frequencies, you do not get "used" to the noise as if it were running constantly.

I bought my Vortech because of the small size in the tank. You can definately hear the Vortech, & it's louder than I thought it would be. Now if your tanks back half is in a fishroom, the noise would be no big deal.

we have 4 VTs in our inwall 380. The fishroom is in the garage. You can hear the VTs throughout the entire house (even upstairs) when we have them in pulse mode anywhere above 60% speed or so.

Now, that being said, I don't believe that Tunzes are exactly silent either. We had 2 tunzes on our old tank and I could still hear them "whirring" up and down as the 7095 controller changed their speeds. Where they quieter than the VTs ? Hard to say... two different tanks, different speeds/settings and different numbers of pumps.

I will also say that the Tunzes had a higher maintenance requirement (from experience) than the VTs, most likley due to the motor being on the outside with the VTs The heat from the motor on the Tunzes used to be a problem with causing calc buildup in the impellor, etc.. and the Tunzes also used tank water circulated through the pump and motor sections to cool the motor. So if calc buildup clogged this flow the pump could overheat (and that wonderful piercing Tunze alarm on the driver would go off :)). But that may have been resolved by design changes, I don't know as I have not followed Tunzes since we bought ours 2+ years ago. (they were the old, orig 6100s)

I wish the VTs had an audible alarm because I can't see them all without having to go around the tank and look at them. I guess if you had them installed inside a stand, it would be the same case.

I think a good comparison of the "whirr" is having your phone on vibrate and it going off all the time. I just recently switched to having my VT in pulse mode and I constantly think my phone is going off.

you can't compare the two. one is inside the tank and one is outside.
Yes you can.

The Vortech is very loud compared to the Tunze especially if you run 4 pumps.

If you run the Tunze out of the water to test it is far more quite than the Vortech.

I like the vortech pumps but the noise is a real pain.

It appears to be a hit or miss regarding the noise issue with these pumps. You will always hear a
"whirling" sound from the motor end when it's set to a high GPH, but some units are louder then others. I've encountered a few that were fairly quiet when the GPH is set below 60-70% but the one I just sent in for warranty work (pulsing and noise issues) can be heard from across the room even at the lowest setting.

I actually hear a loud whirring noise coming from the wet ends, not necessarily the motor side. Our motors are in the fish room, separated from the house. the "noisy" side for us is the viewing pane, although I realize that a noisy motor could be vibrating through the tank. But with our tank being 1/2" glass and that we still have the pin spacers installed and in use, I am leaning away from that as the cause of the noise.

I do agree that it is hit and miss. Of our 4 pumps at least one is quite quiet.. another is relatively quiet and the other 2 are noticeably noisier.

We did have a noisy motor, but ETM swapped it out for us under warranty without any hassle. But the "noise" on a wet end isn't really a warranty issue, beyond a bad bearing, shaft, etc. And all of ours have already been replaced in December (not to mention our wet end warranties ran out last week).

Sparkss......how exactly was the warranty work handled? I was told to just send it in and I did. They did not provide me with any RMA # or anything for me to track the repair or even take any of my info down for that matter. Did they contact you as to what was wrong with the pump prior to them repairing it and sending it back?

Jimmy, They just did the swapout. The turnaround was pretty quick, but historically I rarely get tracking #s from them on warranty repair returns unless I specifically ask for one. And no, I don't recall any explanation of what was wrong, but then again they may not have done a deep dive into the motor to see why it wasn't worling properly, but instead just verified that it was in fact "not working" and replaced it. To be honest I am OK with that, outside of possibly identifying possible quality control or design issues with the motors there wouldn't be much value in full blown diagnosis of the bad motor (imo).

Tom....thanks for the info. I spoke with the repair tech and the pump is on its way back to me. He told me he couldn't pin point the exact problem but there was a problem with the pump so he pretty much changed out all the parts on it. I agree with you, I don't really care too much for an explanation.......as long as I get the pump back problem free.

glad to hear it's on it's way back to your tank (by way of you :)). Let us know how the noise compares once you get it back, and what modes and speeds you run it at.. thanks :)

Of course you may need to let it run for a couple of days or more to re-seat everything before it quiets down to whatever it's "operating noise level" will be. :).

My noise issue is on the motor side, but unfortunately i didn't have anything to compare it to since I only bought 1. I thought it was loud (i can hear it across the room and upstairs!) but when sending in for repair on another issue (i was an early adopter) I was told it was ok, but got the feeling he had forgotten to check that cuz he just kinda blew the issue off (IMO).

Now 2 friends recently bought one and theirs prove to me how noisy mine is! At least you guys were under warranty. I have discovered the truth too late apparently!

if you buy the WWD it should extend your warranty for 1 yr from the purchase of the WWD. If you buy one before next Fri it would be $75, after that they go to $100. HTH
