Noisy Return Line

My 75 gallon tank has a 3/4" return fittings with a 5/8" plastic tubing back to the sump. It was very noisy. I changed the fitting to a tee and stuck a brass tube down it with holes drilled every 1/2" or so. It seemed to quiet it down for awhile. Now, it's getting noisy again. Any recommendations for a permanent solution? Would going to a 3/4" return line help or make it worse?

Maybe its the pump youre using?

My 75 is silent almost, i use pretty big pvc and line tho

I cant tell u the size bc i bought it used but its not small

Is this the drain line or the return line you are talking about? On a side note NEVER use brass in a marine tank, brass has copper in it, a poison to corals and invertebrates!

OK, I'll take the tube out and replace it with some other material. My return pump is a Rio1700. With my setup it should yield about 180 fpm. I have to recirc about 1/3 of that to keep the drain line quiet. There are times that it is quiet but then there are times that it's the gurgling brook too. Would a larger return line help or cause more noise? Right now it seems like the return line is full of water. Probably why its quite right now.

I like to use two drain lines, a primary that I use a gate valve on to back the water up almost to the top of the drain and a secondary emergency drain that will only be used if there is an obstruction in the primary drain line. What you are almost certainly hearing is water falling down the drain tube and the gurgling that causes as it sucks air into the drain line.
