Non-Reef question

Why, are yours missing? If so, I would check in Jason's backyard first........I lock up all my valuables when he comes to my house. If they are not there, I would then be suspicious of Barrett. He is a big guy and I can see him eating a whole yard full of chickens.......then again, neuroslicer would want the egg embryos for some experimentation of sorts, so I would make him a person of interest as well.

chickens in backyard

I kept chickens in my backyard my whole childhood. I never kept more than 8 at a time (in a large yard). Just keep their wings clipped so they cant fly over the fence.

I almost forgot. You also need to build them some sort of coop with roosting area and a few nests so that they can lay eggs in. You can put golf balls on the nests and it will teach them to lay their eggs there.

Coon dog, Thank you for the information. Great tips, never heard about golf ball trick. Did you like chickens as a pet?

My wife really hates any pet having fur. The previous owner of our current house left us a huge gift after their moving out, countless number of flea. It took three months to remove them. Thus, no dog, no cat, no fur etc etc....

No chickens in backyard, but I do have some in my fridge....

Nam, I once lived a bit outside of the city once in Florida and a friend of mine had all kinds of fowl. There really were pretty fasinating all the varieties and colors. He had two children and they that got a kick out of them.

I presume where you live in Gtown they will allow them? Anyway, good luck.

I think so but I need to confirm directly to germantown office or something. I found so many people in Mid-town keep hens in their backyard and Shelby county allow to keep upto 6 hens. Rooster is not allowed because it's just a male..haha!!

My little sister did a school project were she had to try and hatch some eggs. They said the success rate was like 40% so she got 20 eggs from a friend. Well needless to say 18 of the 20 hatched. So we had 17 hens and 1 rooster that lived in our small Bartlett backyard for about 3 years. They slowly got picked off by hawks, opossums and raccoons. They used to sleep in a tree in our side yard at night. Also My sister-in-law has about 10 chickens in her yard in Collierville. So I bet its legal in Germantown.

I have 23...Pain in the Arse!!!

Lots of eggs though. My backyard is 7 1/2 acres does that count?

23 chickens in 7 1/2 acres. So I can have 1.288 chicken in my yard.
Do you have all regular size chickens? if so, two bantams are good for my yard.. haha...

I had any size any breed that you could imagine. I tried keeping a few roosters but to much noise and mean. We always had more eggs than we knew what to do with. They're better than what you can by in store, imo. We had dogs, cats, rabbits,.... you name it and never had one flea or tick in our yard. I dont remember my parents even having a bug exterminator.

That sounds like so much fun. Bantams are so cool looking. IME as long as the chicks are socialized from a very young age they make awesome pets.
