Normal for Birdnest???

Looks like my Pink Birdnest has started losing some tissue. I can't see any wee beasties upon inspection (i.e. red bugs, or flatworms etc...)......is this what is considered RTN? My water parameters are great and meet all the normal reef tank requirements. I have great Polyp extension on all corals including this one. Any thoughts as to what might be going on? I have seen boirdsnest that look white at the base so I was wondering if this was a common thing for this species of coral or is something more sinister going on....

Here is a picture I took a few days ago:

I lost one a couple of months ago that way. Whats your flow like. Mine was so very happy and then bam. I hope you have no pests but to me it rtning from base up isnt a good sign.

just like wentreefgirl said, mine was doing VERY well then it started stning. this has been going on for a month. and I inspected my corals too, no pests

Mine like I said was beautiful and just decided it was board and wanted some new scenery. Since then I have 2 new frags but I keep it on the aqua pic because it seems to be doing well there. It gets perhaps 360 degree flow that way. Let me see if I have a pic of it. Mind you I hope it does ok as its radom.

And actually looking at the pic i posted of the pink with green polyps it has a branch below that is rtn uggggh.

Birdsnest are decently hardy corals and even the wild colonies seem to do fine. But as with all SPS that are wild caught, sometimes they just recede on you for no reason (more often in Acropora, but doesn't exclude birdsnest).
How has your alkalinity been? Has it been fluctuating? How about the pH? These are factors that I think can affect tissue health in coral, as far as slow recession goes.
Maybe you've done this already but what inhabitants do you have in your tank? Very often crustaceans, or crabs will pick at corals and even though they're not there when you inspect, doesn't mean they're not eating your coral! Many are nocturnal and very secretive so it'd be hard even to spot, not to mention catch.

my alkanlinity and pH should be stable, i had added kent's superbuffer to my water and lately I've been making the switch to a calcium reactor. The rtning had started before the calcium reactor was put up.

but still, I have other sps in my tank and if flucuation were the case I think some of the other corals would pick it up

the dont have any evil crustaceans. only scarlet hermits, snails, and a cleaner shrimp

the only fish I think would be a bother is the false lemonpeel dwarf angel, but I doubt he is the culprit because the rtning is from the base

i will definitely be on the look out tonight,

besides the usual redbugs and nudi's and AEFW which can be found pretty easily if you know what you're looking for, what other pests are there??

WELL today I checked my birdnest, I dont know if its cuz it got stung or water, but the tips of the branches bleached. I think it fell on my green slimer, when I put it back after an inspection.

But jsut to be on the safe side, I did a 15% water change.

my coral skeleton had some green tint, so someone concluded i might have too much phosphate. So I had added a phophate sponge, which cleared up all my algae in my tank walls... so that might be one of the reasons.

The water change such take care of the phosphate and any other water quality issue. But just to be safe, I'll do another 15% water change on friday. I ordered another seio and I'm going to install a seaswirl that I had in my closet.

So begins the experimentation, I'll let you know.

I think it might be a phosphate problem or flow problem
-- diagnosis, water change and increase water turnover rate.

I had the same problem a year ago and could not figure out why. so I fragged the coral and dipped the frags in iodine dip which was made from using lugols iodine and r/o water. after dipping the frag I noticed the red bugs in the container. For some reason I could not see the red bugs on the coral. It has since grown rather fast.
