Does anyone know if novus #1 has anything harmful in it for our aquarium inhabitants. I can't find the chemical makeup anywhere. I have heard of people using #2 and #3 in the tank when its just drained down, but I don't know about #1 kind of smells like ammonia.

For future reference, all companies in the U.S. are legally required to publish an MSDS for their chemical-containing products. MSDS, or Material Safety Data Sheets, are required safety protocols at most work places, and I would recommend that you have a binder of them on hand for chemicals you work with regularly just as a safety precaution. That way if any type of accident occurs the hospital would know exactly what the chemical is and how to treat it. It might seem like you're being overcautious, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

And to answer your original question, No, Novus #1 does not leave any type of harmful residue. It is basically just dilute isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol with a few other trace ingredients to make it more effective at cleaning. The isopropanol acts as a mild solvent on plastics which allows for the buffing away of minute scratches and "haze."

The other two do leave potentially harmful residues, but they will either dissipate/decompose over time or can easily be rinsed away.
