Do you have to provide hermit crabs with shells besides the
one they originally come in to the tank with?

Once they grow they like switching to a bigger crib. If you want to prevent them from killing your snails (more than usual), you should provide a couple bigger shells

I've seen on TV that a beercan sometimes is sufficient as well...

Yes you do and I would get alot,because one of my electric blue hermit killed my fancy Nassarius snail for his shell.
