OCEANIC/All-Glass MegaFlow overflow kit

Hi, anybody here with a recent version of 58 gallons reef-ready Oceanic tank with a single overflow in the middle of back wall ?

The tank has two equal 1 3/4" holes for 1" bulkheads.
One is dedicated for a 1" drain pipe and the second for a 3/4" return pipe.

I was wondering how does it for for you guys, how quiet is it?
What kind of return pump do you use and how much flow were you able to get from this overflow setup.

Also, I would like to know if anybody considered "overdriving" this overflow with much stronger return pump and using both holes as drains, with returning U-shaped pipes going over the back wall.

It would be nice, if you share your sump ideas for a 58 gallons setup (36"x18" x 21"H).

Any opinions appreciated.

There will be some tweaking needed to quiet it down. As for a return pump that all depends on where the pump is in relation to the tank. For instance my sump is in my basement so I have 1/4 hp return pump.

Overdriving overflows has certainly been done before I personally have not done it, but if you are able to do a search I am sure you can find some detailed threads on this subject.

I found that the drain is not very quite... I put a valve to slow the flow through the overflow and that made it silent. The only sound now is the siphon break. I dont see a problem with using both as overflows but that may be to much turnover in your sump and cause micro bubbles. Just use powerheads or a closed loop for more flow in the display

I have a Rio 2500 in my sump. This gives me 529GPH. I also have 2 Seio M620's in the tank for a total of ~30x flow. Quiet is relative, so I couldn't comment on that.

I agree "quiet" is relative, but either you hear gurgling sound or you do not... Regular splash of water falling through the teeth of the overflow as compared to the gurgling noices of the drain pipe are quite easy to distinguish for me :)

And I understand guys with the sump in the basement are special, so I am asking only for the setup with the sump in the cabinet/stand.

What do you use for the sump ? Something custom made from acrilic ? Or you could adapt lets say 10-15 gallon tank and insert some baffles inside ?

Some plexi panels and silicone (make sure it has no addtives like mildew killer) from HD make for quick baffels, and use the biggest tank you can for the sump, like a 20gal Long if you can manage to get in the stand. you'll spend $30 compared to a $135 for an acrylic sump like the
BS-1 from Marine Depot.

I use a black tub used to feed livestock for a sump. under your 125 with six feet of space in the cabinet I would look for a used 55 gallon tank. Make 3 compartments, 1 for the drains you will need to slow the bubbles, 1 for the refuge and 1 for the skimmer, heaters and return pump. With an in the stand sump you wont have a ton of head, so a pair of mag 7's should do the trick and provide some redundancy at the same time.

Hm... I have 58 gallons OCEANIC tank, and it is only 3 feet long...

I have the same tank and find it very quiet. I cut out the top set of slots and replaced with plastic gutter netting. I am using a 20H tank for a sump. I bought the stand from the store, but if I wre to do it again, I would build one and make it about 6-8 inches taller. My CSS 120 barely fits when installed inside the sump.

OK so I cant read.

now that I see that it is a 58 is there any chance you can set up a basement sump?

I use a durso for the drain and the megaflow kit for the return. I found the durso to be easier to adjust and keeps the overflow darn near dead silent. You can control the splasing noise in the sump either with a filter sock and increasing the diameter of pipe as it enters the sump.

I use a 20L for a sump, you can click my red house for my build log.
