I was about to order this skimmer and noticed that a newer version is about to come out. Does anybody know what the newer version will have that the older one does not?

So far, all we know is they have increased the volute/venturi to be able to suck in more air. Not sure if they will have other design changes as well.

The new models are due out middle of April, but could be longer.

i know the extreme octopus 150 models are awesome i have one and this skimmer pulls out tons of gunk in my 125 gallon.
purchased it from premium aquatics also, great service fast delivery.

Just received my DNW-150 and I have some questions for anyone else who got one recently.

  1. Upon taking it out of the box I discovered that there wasn't a barbed inlet as in the drawing or previous picture. The union fitting only had a small bushing so I'm trying to glue a cut-off piece of pvc barb into this piece.
  2. The diagram shows the recirc pumps outlet having a Tee inside the skimmer body just like the feed inlet but the actual skimmer doesn't have this.
  3. The outlet "uptube" fits very loose into the large union and I don't think it would be water tight unless using a heavy bodied glue. I wrapped the tube several times with teflon tape and twisted it into the union which seemed to work.
[/list=1]I hooked up the skimmer for a test run to clean and check for leaks. All I can say is WOW!!!! :eek2:
This is the finest needle wheel I've ever seen. I only filled the skimmer with fresh water and a few tablespoons of vinegar. The skimmer instantly started frothing and the body was so milky I couldn't even make out any bubbles until it reached the neck. When I turned off the pump a milk cloud remained suspended in the middle for a couple of minutes.

BTW, the recirc pump is mounted vertical (Deltec style) instead of head-on like in the previous pictures. I'll take some pictures tomorrow before I install it under my stand.

Here is the first picture taken of the skimmer running. I had to modify a barb fitting for the feed since my package was missing this piece, but hopefully coralvue will take care of this for me soon.

The skimmer is only running on a bucket of freshly mixed SW right now until I get the proper fitting (my make-shift barb fitting leaks). Until then I'll leave it running in the garage just to make sure nothing starts leaking.

So far it runs as expected but my only gripe is the twist-style outlet for adjusting the water level. A gate valve would work much better but I don't know where to find one in a metric size. In regards to the recirc pump, I have it hooked up to a killa-watt meter and its only drawing 27 watts. Later I'll add a thermometer to the bucket to see if the pump is adding any heat, but I doubt it given the low wattage.
