Octopus Extreme 160 Issue

Hi, I just bought an Octopus 160 extreme skimmer and had a couple of quick questions.

When I attached the air hose to the pump, I noticed it has a bit of a kink in it where it comes off where you attach the hose to the pump. The picture shows the place where you hook up the hose to the pump to the side, but I could not adjust where you hook the air hose up to the side, it is facing straight up. It was the only way that I could attach the pump to the bottom of the skimmer. Am I missing something? I assume that this will affect the skimmers performance? I have the riser pipe turned to open.

Also, what water level should the skimmer be in? It has only been running about an hour and the bubbles are up to the top of the words Reef Octopus.

Thanks

Replace the hose with some 3/8" ID vinyl from your local hardware store. The stock hose is too flimsy. Also don't use the straight piece (B) to submerge the outlet. It tends to cause too much back pressure within the unit. My elbow is a 1/2" under water but I drilled a vent hole in it.

you'll want the water line somewhere in the transition (tapered part) then just let it run with the pinwheel for a week or two. It can take a month or two to fully break in. You'll just fustrate yourself if you try to get it to skim dry until it's broken in.

Also, subsrcibe to the "Octo Extreme Club" thread in this section. It's usually on the first page or two.

Not sure exactly what you are asking but, Ill take a guess here ... the gray volute cover of the pump can be removed and repositioned so that the air nozzle that you attach the pump to can be rotated to a different position. To remove it, you may need to use the insulated handles of a large pair of pliers or channel locks. They are usually hard to turn. Looking down at the bottom of the pump, turning that gray cover counterclockwise just a partial turn will remove it. Then you can replace it so that the air nipple is facing one of, I believe, 3 different directions. Just be careful to not break the ceramic shaft when removing and replacing that gray cover.

Hi, thanks again for the help.

Do you mean that the water inside the skimmer should be in the transition (tapered part)?
I have the skimmer sitting in about 9" of water in my sump. Is that deep enough?
I will remove the B part of the pipe from the skimmer outlet. Is it ok to just leave it with the 90 degree elbow pointing down or should I add a small piece of pipe to keep the outlet just under the waters surface in the sump?
It does not seem to be producing alot of bubbles, but I guess that is because it has to have time to break in?

Thanks

you can keep the intake tubing, just turn the pump away from the silencer a little. That's what i do with mine and there isn't a kink.
