Odd mold question

This is kind of an odd question but I would feel better with some other opinions. :D

I bought a new aquarium and brought it home to leak test it. I took it to the basement and hooked a hose to the sink that was attached to a de-humidifier.

When I turned the water on, some stuff came out of the hose. I think it was mold because the humidifier hose just drains into the drain in the basement so water sits in it alot.

Anyway, I stopped the water and rinsed the rest of the mold out of the hose and then finished filling up my tank. The water looked pretty clear after that, but I know initially some mold got in my tank.

After my leak test (didn't leak, yay) I emptied all of the water out and wiped down everything with a paper towel. Is there anything else I can use that will kill any mold that might be in there. I don't want to use anything that is going to harm the life that will eventually be in the aquarium. Or do you think I need to worry about this at all?

btw... it will be dry for about a week before I add water, sand and live rock.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

i wouldnt worry about it. Its going to be dry so any mold in there will die b/c of no moisture available

If you're really worried, use 2%-3% bleach to water solution and let it dry

Cool, thank you Snowboarda... that makes me feel better. I think I get a little over paranoid about this aquarium thing. :D

Mold is very resillent, I would take a couple of extra minutes to wipe it down with a diluted mixture of vinegar and water 4/1 ratio should be plenty.

give a hoot!! don't dilute! hehe, jk. I always use 100% mixture. Vinegars super cheap anyways I always spill it when I try to dilute it.

Plus it gives the house that fresh Piggs Feet smell!! :D

Yes, vinegar will kill about 86% of molds. Bleach kills a very small portion and is not advisable, it really only discolors mold.

Thanks for everyone's input. I will wipe it down with some vinegar. That way I can be more confident that the mold is gone. I figure if I can drink vinegar then it probably won't hurt the fish.

Of course with that rationalization...I could give the fish tequila. *thinking*- I wonder if fish would like tequila. :)
