I just received an email about getting an early bird lifetime membership to the New Odysea Aquarium being built in Scottsdale. My Family has a lifetime membership to the Butterfly Wonderland and received the email, but it looks like it is available to the public as well.

Looks like it's going to be pretty amazing. I wonder who is building all of the tanks.

The largest aquarium in the Southwest, totaling more than 200,000 square feet and holding more than 2 million gallons of water, is coming to Scottsdale. From sharks, turtles, and penguins to jellyfish, octopuses and more, OdySea Aquarium will feature some of the most fascinating marine life from around the world.

When the 16-acre OdySea Aquarium opens in December 2015, it will be like no other aquarium in the United States.
Designed with the latest theme park technology, OdySea Aquarium is a totally immersive experience that will take you deeper and deeper into the fascinating world that lies hidden just below the surface of our planet's water.

Through large-scale exhibits, touch pools, a 3D theatre, and more, OdySea Aquarium will bring you closer than ever to thousands of marine animals from around the world. You'll be just inches away from sharks, turtles, jellyfish, electric eels, sting-rays, octopus, penguins and many more.

Plus the depths of OdySea Aquarium will holds a few secrets that will only be revealed to the public once it opens in late 2015!

You'll walk through giant underwater acrylic tubes as thousands of freshwater and saltwater creatures swim around you. Live exhibits will be complemented by state-of-the-art media, interactive shows and entertaining presentations. Only a limited number of Lifetime Memberships are available, for those who act early. Don't miss this rare, limited-time opportunity that will last a lifetime!

thinking out loud.. wonder if they'd partner with FRAG/PROP to grow out corals while they get to display them?

They have been planning this for seven years now I think. I hear about some of the local businesses getting bids to get the tanks made and to do the filtration but I don't think they have started on anything yet.

No, they have not contacted us about growing corals yet. I am not sure if they are going to have a reef tank there.

$1000/4 people = ~$250/person (2 adults and 2 kids).
Tickets to butterfly wonderland is $20/tic, I would think tics to odysea would be much more.
Just assuming the cost of tickets are ~$25-35, after 7-10 visits, you would recoup your investment :) Everything after that is free for life!

good place to take the kids if family are in town without driving too far.

Of course this will be worth it if you and you family enjoy going there.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I was at Butterfly Wonderland today. They are breaking ground on the aquarium on the 5th! 16 months projected until opening day. This place looks crazy

If the quality and health of the freshwater systems at the butterfly place are any indication of how the aquarium will be, it is going to ROCK.

Yah we are sending some dirt equip to McCarthy this week for them to break ground, they just put out the new job trailer last week. I couldn't tell from where I was but that new square structure in front of butterfly is a billboard for the aquarium?

It is a trailer, you can go in and talk to the rep about the project and buy memberships.

I dont think they want to be too specific again since they originally said December 2015. Based on the contracts we could be looking at mid 2016 if everything goes smooth, and we know how that is on projects like this.

Right now they just have skip loaders for grading and water trucks for dust control, they will probably end up getting the really big dirt equip from empirelike the huge excavators.
