I have an oily film on the top of my water. Is this normal or do i have to get rid of it??? How do i get rid of it???

I have this in my BC29 from time to time and it's caused by the filter slowing down the skimming on the top layer of water. What I do is pull this filter for a few hours at a time and it will allow flow to increase and get rid of that oily layer.

i have that problem in my 29 also. at least i did until i got a little power head or something to send just a little flow up to the top of the tank so that the water sitting on top was added into the water flow. presto problem fixed.

dissolved organics. surface skimming in combination with surface aggitation and water changes will yield the best results.

feed less, clean more.

MATT nailed it. Agitation to break the surface tension, helps the skimmer( considering there is no overflow ) ROCK-OUT! The flow is never to low, as long as it shows! Just my 2 cents! Kudos to matt!
