Ok time to upgrade!

Ok I am ready to get a better camera and I need your input.

I am thinking of getting the Canon 40D. Will I see a vast improvement from a Rebel XT?

Thanks.

Honestly, other than being able to make larger prints it won't make much difference. The 40D has better AF performance but image quality is going to be about the same. You'd be better served by upgrading your glass. I definitely like the feel of the *0D bodies over the XT but that's purely an ergonomic thing.

Hmmm that's what I was thinking you might say...

Would the live preview and the ability to have presets not be enough reason to upgrade along with having a new gadget? :)

I should just get some new lens though really...

Only you can answer that. ;)

I went from XT to 30D and was happy with the upgrade but it really didn't change image quality.

If you're still using the kit lens, the 17-85 IS would be a nice upgrade that would make a noticeable improvement in your images.

The 40D is a far superior camera but as said previously, image quality is about the same on all of these. It is the extra bells and whistles which make photography much easier (and imo more enjoyable as a whole) which set them apart.
Now I do a lot of auto racing, football, basketball, volleyball, and other sports. The 7 pictures per second with 17 RAW or 75 JPEG in a row for example makes life MUCH easier. If your REALLY good you can take just one picture with an Xt and be solid. I anticipate a play and go ci-ci-ci-ci-ci-ci-ci-ci-ci-click. Keep the 3 good ones and throw away the rest. There are many other examples like this which set cameras apart. Image quality is marginal.

Now a full frame 5D would likely be a "vast improvement" from an Xt. I'll let drparker comment further, as he actually made the switch.

I use a 5D as well ;) and yes that would be worth the upgrade.

You'd also have to buy glass too as your kit lens from the XT won't work on the 5D. That gets you to $2900 for the 5D + 24-105

Go buy some nice glass.
