OK. What now?

Was sitting quietly in my office just now and heard a somewhat alarming sound come from my aquarium. I look up to find the center glass support silicone has let go on one side and the glass is now hanging down in my tank.

Is this a simple fix like lower the water level, clean the glass, and redo the silicone? Or is it time to look at buying a new tank? I put this piece in when I got the tank years ago, so I can do it again if it needs done.

Do I need to worry right now about the rest of the tank? Does that glass support relieve so much outward pressure that I need to do something like ratchet strap the tank until I can replace that glass?

Sheesh.

Dang that is scary. I would probably brace it temporarily while you figure out the next steps.

Just me though.

Not sure the finer details like tank size, why there was no center brace before, why you added one, etc

There was a center brace before. The guy who owned the tank before me set a metal halide light on it to see what his tank would look like lit up and the heat shattered the glass.

I replaced the glass when I got the tank something like 7 years ago. I have no idea what kind of glass was in there before, but I used 1/2" glass for the replacement.

I have removed the glass bracing for now. It was pretty easy to just cut the silicone and pull it out. It looks totally hoosier right now because I've got a ratchet strap around the top of the tank just in case.

I'm thinking about instead of having one large center brace, having the glass cut into two smaller braces that I can spread out a bit. But I have no idea if that would even help anything. Or if that center brace is really necessary.

Personally I'd look into a new tank with the age and two center brace fails now. I chose not to repair the 120 that failed on me just because of the age and seeing coralline in the corner caulk joints.

I've had two tanks that have had a center brace failed on me and bith bowed minimum 1/2 inch out. That's a lot of extra pressure and movement on the corners
