Old Canon L glass

I used to shoot alot but have been out of it for a while. Are there any issues using old lenses with the DSLR's? I have the 28-80 2.8-f4L and 80-200f2.8L as well as some others and was thinking about the D40 or 5D. I like the idea of a FF sensor but that is some extra coin to step up to the 5D. Can one still use the EF25 extension tube to reduce minimum focusing distances for close up work? My old EOS1 has held up well (wore out a shutter and winder in the booster) but it's time to get on the band wagon.

If those old lenses are FD mount, as opposed to EF [autofocus] you can use them but you'll need an adapter. You'll have to set the aperture manually and focus manually too. Extension tubes- same thing, and yes they do reduce the minimum focus distance allowing you to get better close-ups. The lens you use the extension tube/s with will determine how much magnification you get.
It really is expensive to get into high end photography nowadays... but then, everything is expensive nowadays :p

Thanks gregr, the lenses are all EF. the first series of EF L pro lenses 1990, '91, it's nice to think after 17 years they may do the job. I don't think prices have gone up too much, well at least not the lenses, but 5k for a pro body- ouch. At least I won't be spending money on film/ developing.

I think that you will learn to love a lot of the benefits of digital v film and that after not too long you'll wish you'd done it sooner. Fyi- the Canon 40D is a great camera and would be a good choice. Or you could look for a used 1DMIIn (which is what I use) because now that there's finally a newer model the prices should drop down below 3K. Or like Beerguy you could pick up a 5D- full frame and good value. Lotsa options in the $2-2500 (or less) range.
