One positive from the ice storm

I always try to look on the bright side of life, and last night I found another one.

This storm dropped enough ice/sleet that last night I strapped on my goalie skates, grabbed a stick and puck and skated all through my yard and town!

Since I live in a small town, none of the roads are plowed, so I could easily get from one block to another.

Since my neighbors already think I am crazy (I wear shorts year around), I believe I now have a firm hold on the eccentric title.

To give you an idea as to depth.

This 'ice' is pretty solid, I was doing some pretty hard cuts, crossovers, and power stops on it.

I am hoping that I can get another skate or two out of it, and maybe it will stick around for this next weekend's storm.

And yes, I am a sicko. :D

That's crazy how hard the ice is! Go you! I've never been ice skating before, and it really looks fun, but man I don't fall gracefully...

If you ever want to learn ice skating, two/three pieces of advice.

One, wear hockey skates, not figure. You get better ankle support, and no damn toe pick.

Two, if you can, use a hockey stick. It acts as a pivot, so if you start to fall forward, you just put out the hockey stick = no fall.

Three, you are going to fall. Hate to say it, but it is going to happen. Hell, I fell last night catching a weird edge.

Other than that, it's easy to learn to ice skate! lol

Actually, I have been thinking about renting the ice out of an hour or so, as I want to get my wife and some of my friends out there and take some shots at me.

That is a perfect time to learn, as then you don't have a mess of people around you, along with being able to use a hockey stick (Which you can't use at a public skate).

I was just thinking that last night! I was going to PM you about it today. Don't be surprised if my wide eyed face shows up at your doorstep for some late night lessons. :D

How much is it like roller blading??

It is pretty close, except on skates you can stop on a dime (Power stop, like skiing). Otherwise, much of the same muscle memory, skate stride, etc. is the same as rollar blading.

You will notice though that when you turn, you will be able to cut much more sharply due to a sharper edge of metal vs. wheel.

Otherwise, if you can rollar blade, you can ice skate.

One big difference, is if your rollar blades are not 'rockered' (where the two middle wheels are lower than the two edge wheels), then it will take a bit to get used to, as hockey skates are rockered.

Now goalie skates are flat all the way across, so they have their own idiosyncrasies. FWIIW, my wife uses my old pair of goalie skates whenever we go out to skate. She prefers them over my player skates.

Hey Travis, if you can make it down, you are more than welcome to strap on a pair of skates and have at it!

Tonight I have hockey practice, but other than that, you are more than welcome to do it!

Dependent upon shoe size, I have my player skates and my old goalie skates for ya! Plus I have tons of sticks, and a number of player gloves for you.

I'll even let you have one of my helmets too! See, I am a nice guy! lol

Suit me up and take pictures of me falling. I'm sure it will be good for a laugh for COMAS. ;) :lmao: BTW, I'm willing to suit up in as much goalie gear as I can and let you take shots at me!

I can ice skate, but can't roller blade for the life of me.

I'm hoping for the same thing for myself. I can't roller blade worth a flip, but I'm hoping that the ice skates will give me the ankle support that I need.

Now THAT would be funny!

I actually have enough gear to suit another goalie, so that would be no problem.

Actually, when I rent out the ice, you are more than welcome to run with it there. It would be easier to see the puck, than at night in my yard!

Curious Poke and Travis, did you either learn to ice skate before you tried roller blade?

I will say that it is different, as your edges are different. Also, since quite a number of roller blades were made with the hard, outer plastic boot, they do not mold to your foot/shin to give you good support as a ice hockey skates.

I wonder if this has/would made a difference for you.

Never been on ice skates. I tried roller blading for about a month and even tried to train to strengthen my ankles, but my roller blades were just to flexible. I broke my wrist going down a hill one day and I quit roller blading since. After that, I just got too large to try again. Maybe ice skating will help me shed a few pounds ;)

I think I can get used to the edges pretty easily, but the ankle support is a must have. My ankles always bent outward and wouldn't stand up straight, so I was never good at anything but a couple slow, awkward grinds. :)

I can't skate worth a darn. Actually, in this ice, I can't stand worth a darn.

But I can slide down my driveway in a laundry basket! My four year old and I had a great time this morning. I tied a 50 foot power cord to the basket and wrapped the other end around my car tire in the garage.

Kick the kid down the hill, then haul him up again. Over and over. All from the relative warmth of the garage.

I envy those with balance who can skate. I always wanted to be Dorothy Hamill. ;)

I did the exact same thing! I fell down a hill here in Norman (surprisingly 8 years before I ever thought of moving here), and I broke my wrist! But then again, I also broke it with my sister (Firebug) being an acrobat.... and again riding horses....

Maybe I should just sit this one out. Ice skating would just be asking for x-rays.

Sorry had to chime in since I am resurrecting my childhood hockey career. Soo...Santa brings me all new equipment this year because the new season will start in T town soon [for us over 30 almost 40 folk]. I have my skates and pads on with the goals set up in the street with my son and some neighborhood kids. I'm showin off to the kids with slap shots [falling after each...but hitting the net!]. All of the sudden this guy comes up the hill toward my house on skates at what seemed to be 30 mph, he has a rope around his waste and is pulling 3 kids in a sled! Come to find out he plays for the Tulsa Oilers...now I feel like a total dork with all my pads on and my Buffalo Sabres jersey. He totally schooled me! By the way, he is the "bruiser" of the team - lots of fights! My new nicknames courtesy of my wife - "fishgeek and hockey dork". I'm sure it is said with much love though!

That is awsome Scott!!

Do you ever get to go watch the Oilers?

I used to go all the time when I lived in Sapulpa. That was back when...

Nick, I did ice skate before trying roller blading. By many years. I learned ice skating when I was a kid, they didn't have roller blades untill years after that and even then I didn't try it until probably 10 years ago. The kids got a HUGE kick out of watching me try though!!
Of course, I had to give them a few checks when we took them ice skating after that! Gotta luv physics and the laws of momentum!!

To true! You put a few good checks on somebody, and that will keep them in line! lol

I learn ice skating first, and then went to on to learn roller. It does take a bit of getting used to, but I think that it helped in my case that I had roller hockey skates. The boots are about the same, so I didn't have the hard, plastic outer shell to contend with.

I really think that is the difference maker, as you need to get your skate to fit as snug and comfortable as possible to make it easier to skate.

I do miss playing check hockey, but it is one of those things that unless you have grown up playing check hockey, to get thrown into it is just asking for trouble.

That is a real cool story! During the summers, sometimes the Blazer players come out an skate, which is always a blast. Most minor league players I have met are real cool, pretty down to earth.
