Anyone interested in a group buy from Rod Buehler of Rods-Reef for some small baby onyx. I'm interested in 2 and they seem to be about $25-50 a piece depending on the color. Shipping for 6 total to the cleveland area should be about $45. Let me know in anyone is interested.

I'm not into the whole "name brand" thing but, just so you know, Dan has Australian Black ocellaris clowns for $49 right now at Salty Critter.
They aren't "Rod's" but they are from "down under" which makes them kinda unique. You could pick them out yourself and also watch them eat if you wanted.

Hope that helps

Kevin Rods fish and Onyx are percula the Black And white Clowns are ocellaris. Austrailian black and white ocellaris are becoming more widely available but they are usually nicer than the ORA B&W, and they are just different... Rods onyx are just about the most unique pair of breeding clownfish in the world, there are a few reasons for this.

Rods fish video these are the parents housed in the oldest gigantea anemone known to be living in captivity 12+ years. http://s44.photobucket.com/albums/f1/craftytony/?action=view&current=f3a1118a.flv

1. coloration; they develop the black far more reliably than any CB Percula, and only rod produces fish like them nobody has Tank bred percs that color the same way, save a couple pairs of rods fish that are breeding in private tanks around the country
2. body shape they have a unique stubby thick bodyshape that is especially desireable.
3. Their lineage is known which if your interested in breeding is a +, and can be traced back to the original "onyx" clownfish.

There is no concern as to the health of the fish you will get from rod there is a large thread on RC about them and nobody has ever gotten sick fish or fish that would not eat, they are F3 generation maybe F4 and are very hardy, you cant go wrong with rods fish, and he is a great guy to deal with.

if you dont beleive me read the thread, but i have a pair and they are wonderfull unique and "rare" fish they have not even been available for sale for the last 6 months.

Depending on the timeing I may be interested in a pair, depends on the params of my tank at the time of purchase.

I e-mail Rod to start gathering info about shipping and a better idea on the cost of 6 babies. I will be off next week Friday 9/21 and will be home to receive them. I live in Twinsburg close to 480 and RT91. There seems to be enought interest for 6 babies total. PM me if you are interested and could receive them next week. As things progress, I will let everyone know.

Whoa there... don't get all in a wad... I never said they were not unique. The thing is when I look at a tank I see the corals, fish and rock. If I like them I say, "I like that" I don't say, "Is that Tampa Bay rock?" or "Is that a Tyree Limited Edition Super Duper Radioactive craptasia?"

I see a pair of black clowns and think, "those are nice." I don't care where they came from or if they are true or false perculas. I was just letting the OP know that they were available locally and for less money. You can pay whatever you want to whoever you want and justify it however you want but when it all comes down to it you are paying extra for the name and it's the same whether you are talking about jeans, corals or clown fish.

So, I have seen guys buy 1/4" frags of LE corals for $175 and if I saw a VERY similar coral for sale cheaper elsewhere I would've mentioned it to them too. No need to get all defensive, I am not attacking you personally. I was just pointing that out to maybe help the OP. That's usually the only reason I post anything here.

Heck, if they are cheap enough I might even go for a pair myself.

kevin they look very different onyx and black ocellaris both are cool fish but they are pretty different. im not taking it personal. sorry if it came out that way

the way it works is if you breed two black and white ocellaris 98% of the babies will end up looking just like their parents, but if you find a pair of wild caughy onyx and breed them you will most likely get regular true percula offspring. Rods fish are real special. its in the genes

you wont find CB percula that look like them. they are 50 per fish plus around 58 for shipping
so if you split that 3 ways they are a good deal, LA sells their wc onyx pairs for 499. but that is way too much

i will most likely set it up in a week or two, he has a full set of clowns ready to go and i will be in contact with him for pricing on the group buy depending on how many people we get in

well i need to get some more time together myself to get my tanks setup and and ready to go so all in all i need about 2 more weeks

I contacted Rod last week. Price was $25 per for very young with the start of their white bars and little to no black color. He could ship 6 for $40-45 (what ever it cost him).
I didn't hear back from anyone, so I've been waiting. I'm thinking about waiting till after the Columbus frag swap. I'm not sure what the price would be for the same fish, but a month older.
Let me know what you think.
