Open top Tank dilemma

I need help from any one with an open top tank. One of my fish jumoped out of the tank last night and I was wondering if there is anything available to cover the tank to prevent this from happening again. I don't want to put the glass cover back on fro heat issues. Is there anything available that wont interfere with the light out put? Please help.

what kind of light do you have?? do you have a canopy??, if you have a canopy you can put eggcreate in the back you will still have good ventilation

I have a Aquamedic 250Watt Ocean Light Pendant. There is no canopy just an open top tank.

eggcrate will be your best bet. its not a 100% perfect solution for jumpers, but it definitely will cut down the chances of one getting out.

You can buy it really cheaply at home depot or lowes... its sold as "light diffusers"

it might a little, but it shouldn't make abig differance. A glass top will affect the light alot more than eggcrate.

I have a 40 stretch hex. I'm just worried about my corals getting enough light

or you can build a canopy for your tank, is not to hard and you can make it high with open top if you want, i think that with eggcreate you going to loose a good amouth of light, just my .02c

There are a few types of egg crate. Some that are just straight from top to bottom, and some that actually have a larger and smaller size.

The straight type is the same thickness when you look at it on one side or the other. Meaning .10 thickness on top through the bottom.

The other type is supposed to have a narrowing design to it and it is thicker on one side vs the other. So the top is .10 and the bottom is .20. This type has to be setup so that the thicker side is at the bottom with the narrow side at the top. I saw an article online that said that this type of eggcrate may help increase the light focus, like a reflector.

Careful with MH lights over eggcrate, it may melt.

I didn't realize that there was another type of egg crate than the plastic white one. I will definitely look into it. Maybe I'll check out a light store.
