I have a frag of red people eaters that have been in my tank for over two months. As of the beginning of the week, they looked great and almost looked as if they where about to grow a new polyp. Well, as of today, they are all closed up. Two out of the four polyps have been closed for two days now and the third one has been barely open for those same two days. The fourth polyp was slow to open today, and is only open 50%. All my other Zoos and Palys are doing great. No problems.

So the question is.... what is causing this. Is this normal for red people eaters. I have some Revive I was thinking about using if it continues. Anyone think this will help? I was also considering doing a water change, but all my parameters are in order, so I'm not sure if this will do anything.

Opinions please.

the famous line for most is "all my parameters are in order"

Unless you are a professional and stated your parameters in the past you should always just state exactly what the parameters are...REASON because if someone else has kept this type before and had slightly different PARAMETERS IN ORDER but yet successful in keeping this coral would be helpful info to you to see if you tweak your perfect parameters to keep that coral happy or get rid of it.

i have been told they like higher flow and higher light.

That is where I have mine, and they are very happy. You said they were just budding new head, sometimes zoos will close up when they are sprouting new heads. A revive dip can't hurt but it might not help. Check them close for any irritators or if something around them was moved that is stinging them.

Based on an earlier post about keeping RPE and this one, lets take this discussion a little further. Please define high flow and high light. IME, true Red PE will not take high light, the bluish circle disappears under high light. Also explain if high flow is direct or random.

Edit; you may also be better served with a more direct title: "Secrets to Keeping Red PE"

High light: 250 MH halide 4 inches under the surface of the water (light is 8 inches above the tank). The light is in the middle of the tank and it is a corner frag rack so not directly underneath it.
High flow: mp10 right next to it (blows off the opposite wall and comes back strong as well)

I will get some pics up to see if the blue ring is gone.

Thanks MnN, wasn't directing my post at you alone, just in general. Anybody have any thoughts on alkalinity tied to to these? I've noticed with most of my PEs that alkalinity, especially alkalinity swings, are key. One of the things I try and do now, if I'm purchasing a PE is find out what the seller's alkalinity is at, so I know how much of an alkalinity swing the frag will be experiencing.

So the person that told me they need higher flow and light gave me a frag of them, I first put them in high light medium flow they looked great for the first day then the next 2 days they were closed. So I then moved them to highest light in my tank and high flow and the first day they were closed the next day they were wide open and looked great! High light in my tank is 3 inches under water with a 48w LED light fixture 12 inches above water. The LEDs are running about half power blue and 40% white. flow is 60x turn over and the RPE's are 20 inches away from a Koralia 1 pointed directly at them. Hope this helps everyone.

I have an update for you all. I moved my RPE's to the highest point in the tank, and put them under direct flow (about twenty inches from a k-3) and three out of the four have opened back up. They were originally at the lowest point in the tank, and were quite happy, however, I forgot to mention in my original post that my Rio 2100 went on the fritz and they closed up about two days later. I have 4 48 in HO's over my 55 and they seem to love the light. So it seems it was a water flow issue more than anything (I'm guessing). I will be doing a water change tomorrow, and I will let you all know whether the fourth polyp opens up.
