A few days ago I posted a thread of the new corals that I bought. Of these corals one was an elegant from Marine Solutions. After my purchase I recieved some bad new (i.e. that elegant's are almost impossible corals to keep alove) from other SEASL members. Well today the elegant started to spew it guts out so I had to remove it. It had not looked good for the past couple of days. Here is my question

First I would like to state that the death of this coral (and wate of $125 OUCH) it is at least partially my fault for buying a coral that I did not research. If I had I would have noticed that alomst every site so do not buy.
BUT
When I expressed interest at MS about the coral, I was told that they are very hearty. The liked med-low light and flow. They said that my setup is perfect and that the coral would do absolutely fine as long as I added calcium weekly.

As I said, I know some of the blame goes to me, but in my opinion MS employees should not say that a coral is hearty when every other source available says the exact opposite. I like the store, its selection etc but things like that really dissapoint me.

Let me know what you guys think.

Sorry for your loss, that happenped to me in the past same scenario, later was told by diffrent person with more knowlege at same store, bottom line IMO BUYER BEWARE !!!!

make shur you do the research

everyones tank is different and anything could have killed the coral

i have tryed them in the past and failed just like you

remember just because they work at a pet store doesnt mean they know anything

Lesson learned sorry to hear it was a big one. This isn't the first time and won't be the last. Whoever sold you the coral obviously knows less than you now. These threads normally get pretty heated. You can only hope that it comes up in a search and educates the next guy.

you are right some research is always a good idea . one the other hand a store that has ben around as long as ms shod not even stock such hard to keep corals . in my opinion most of the fish in that store would be better off left in the ocean.

I know who sold that to Dizzy and he is the most knowlegable one up at Ms I saw those corals and they were some of the nicest ones I saw in a long time. It is a shame that it did not make it.

everytime i'm in there and try to talk fish with them i usually get the reply, "yeah, i dont really want to mess with SW anymore" or "I do this so much here i really dont want to be around it at home" which tells me they really arent interested in the hobby. so they probably dont take the time to really know their stuff or simply dont care. a few folks in there are cool. but i have mixed feelings over all.

ive not had good experiences with ms in general, but youre right, they should have never told you that was a hearty coral. for future referance, if you try one of those again, wait till your tank is at least a year or two old, keep them in the sand, and dont put them in a tank with a protein skimmer

Brad-Scott-Jeramy-Gary-Harry-Greg-Brian-Dwayne all have tanks of there own the only 2 that dont is Mark and Rich so you cant say or don't know that much about the people that work there. Almost all of the people that work there are knowlegable about the hobby just alot of people dont listin or dont want to.
You can't get mad for them selling you stuff if you as a hobbest don't take the time to learn what you are buying IMHO.

could have been something else

you are going to kill something along the way if it is $5 or $125

suggest not buying thr expensive stuff if you are not shur about what you are buying

well i dont know who is who there. i just relayed what i've experienced. not knocking MS i visit more than once a week. just the feeling i get .. not a statment intended to be taken as fact. maybe its cause they are always busy when i'm in.

For some reason Elegance corals lost the hearty nature they once had. 6-7 years ago they were all over the place and people had great success keeping them then all of the sudden nobody could keep one alive for very long. I think it had something to do with a change in the location or depth they were collected from- I can't remember but there was a time when lots of them were sold and they did well....

A couple of years ago I knew a couple guys that had elegances in their tanks for 3-4 years and not only did they thrives but they had gotten absolutely huge!

like i said, i know that it is partially my fault. sometimes you just see something that you really want, and for how nice it looked I knew that it would not be there if I waited till I did some research. I just wish that there was some kind of lemon law Or that I had been warned like almost all other stores do that this coral was hard to keep. I hace been told this before at other LFS and listened to their advice.
the man who sold me the coral seemed very knowledable and trustworthy. i know that they are out to make money but that is not the best way as they are a specialty store with a limited number of customer base i would think that they would like to keep everyone happy.
As I said earlier I know I could have stopped this myself but do not feel that it should have happened this way.

I asked about them too and was immediatly told "you dont want that, they are really hard to keep"

I came back a few days later and the pink tipped one (IMO the best looking one was sold) I hope that one lived, it was REALLY nice looking.

No one should have sold you an elegance with out wishing you the best of luck and included a free four-leafed clover.

MS let that one be sold, someone else with a conscience would have said this ones not for you, or better yet would have not ordered it. I do not care what MS does and I am not trying to insult anyones knowlege or anything like that, but that is one coral that should never be considered hardy, no matter how good it looks and no matter who says it "should" have lived. It wont plain and simple.

You learned an expensive lesson, sorry buddy.

I agree I dont think they should be sold but they are . I was not saying that it was right just that we need to know better.
