OR, Sedra or GenX - which one ?

I am getting started on building a Deltec clone skimmer, I've read pros & cons on both OR and Sedra, I could sure use some opinions on theses pumps, also I have noticed that GenX has needle wheel pumps, but can't find much info on them. Does it use an OR style needle wheel ?

Thanks in advance for any input

Chris

From what I have heard is it depends on the height of your reactor chamber. If it is higher then 25" then you want to go with an OR pump and for lower the Sedra. I made a Deltec clone and it has a 6" diameter chamber that is around 24" tall, I use a Sedra 5000 with it and it works very good. I also made a similar one with an OR2700 and I was just not near as impressed with it as with the Sedra. The Sedra Venturi is very well designed and pulls TONS of tiny bubbles.

I've been asking this same question on a couple of threads; so far Rich has been one of the only ones to answer. The little bit of research I've been doing would lead me to think that a more even comparison between the OR and sedra pumps would be OR2700 to sedra 3500, OR 3700 to sedra 5000, right? I mean, in terms of wattage....I'm going with the Sedra on your recommendation, but I'm still trying to decide between 3500 and 5000; it's a 5.75" I.D. (or 5.5") reaction chamber, maybe 22" tall. The system is only about 75 gallons, so I'm not concerned with the skimmer's overall size, I just want to match up the right pump with the size skimmer I'm building.

I have used the sedra 9000 on a recirculating skimmer setup and now 3 genx-6000NW pumps. I have the say, the Gen-x pulls alot more air, runs quieter, and is more energy efficient. Even Euro-reef has switched over to gen-x to make thier NW pumps for them. PM me if you have any other questions about them and i will try to help as much as possible.

I like the OR pumps better, but they don't come with a venturi, match it up with a good venturi and it works great.

the sedra venturi will fit the OR, but you will need to sand it down a little to get it to fit. after sanding it a bit you can glue it in a 1" coupling or union depending on how you plan to plumb it.
