ORA Frag ID

This is an ORA frag straight from ORA on the black plug. It's supposed to be Joe The Coral. Thought Joe was a Tenuis, this is a Staghorn no?

Dig the Avatar :) Yep,looks like a Stuber..... Damn, I ordered a Joe the Coral from Live Aquaria and they sent me this. Been a couple of days since I received the order too, hope they don't give me a hard time.

Can we confirm its definitely not Joe the Coral before I give them a call tomorrow?

Wharf Rat

you can also email a pic to ORA just to verify. I purchased an ORA frag form the LFS store they called Micronesian Raspberry. Next shipment they got in more raspberry that looked nothing like the frag I picked up. Turns out after a few emails back and forth with ORA, I have the MIMF pink and green.

i am very skeptical of the Stuber Stag ID. Im more inclined to think it is Joe the Coral, just not as grown out as you were expecting.

I mailed that pic to Live Aquaria, they agreed it's the Stuber. They're sending me out a Joe the Coral frag tomorrow.

It does appear more green than the pics I've seen of the Stuber, which look mostly brown with blue growth tips....It has excellent polyp extension and I swear the frag has grown in the week I have it which would be more indicative of the Stuber but who knows?

Now I'm really confused. Any other opinions?

A pic that is correctly white balanced would be helpful. However due to the incredible color change corals can experience color is usually not a good indicator of what's what. The growth patten of that coral however is not similar to any tenius.

The problem with this though is that flow can obviously affect growth patterns and it is still a small frag.

So when I attempt to adjust this for color temp we get this:

Looks a lot like the Stuber. But I'm not sure if my adjustments are correct.

Yeah, I know it's a crappy IPhone pic but if you disregard the way the rocks look , the frag appears pretty close to the way it looks in the tank. Who am I to argue with LA ? They say it's a Stuber and that they sent the wrong frag.

Thanks for the help everyone

Posted at the same time. It's more green than the adjustments you made. My pic looks closer to what it actually looks like

i do. ive seen a lot of variability with the ORA pieces as far as shapes go. even color can vary depending on the time of year ive heard (grown under sunlight).

once the two frags start to get some new growth, you should be able to tell pretty quickly if they are different species.

I have these two growing next to each other in my tank, and honestly from your pic I can't tell which one it looks more like.

You'll know soon enough. The stuber exploded in huge growth patterns expected for A. Formosa, while JTC colors nicely and grows in a standard tabling acropora formation.

Either way, they're both nice corals! Oddly enough, my stuber stag grew entirely new growth from the base. Whatever small growth it had from the prior tank it was in hasn't moved an inch since I introduced it almost a year ago, but man, it sprouted other giant stalks, and they've grown immensely and opened up a few new growth "knots" where multiple axial corallites sprouted out. Super cool coral to see, though I'm learning it can take up room rather quickly in a tank.
