Orange Coral (Dendrophyllia ramea)

Does anyone keep this coral? From what I have been able to tell is collected by the Canary Islands at a depth of 30 plus meters in 64-77 degree waters.

Don't get a lot of these where I am. Can't imagine they are collected or exported regularly. its a CITES Appendix II species without an export quota and also controlled under Annex B - in a EU wildlife trade regulation.

Worms - lists the following places are sources

Hi,

This species range from all Mediterranean and east north Atlantic (which include canary islands). And it's not collected from canary islands or elsewhere since is strictly protected by contries having this species, doesn't mean if cites have quotas or not, it's illegal to collect by law and highly endangered due to global warming, pollution and specially destruction of seafloor by netfishing. So all illegal.

And if it was incredibly abundant and not endangered, unfortunately it won't do in a reef... It's a temperate to coldwater species that comes from deepwater. Max temperature for it around 66F.

I'm from these seas and if you do scuba and are here some day, I recommend you to ask if you can go with a scuba club to see one, they're extremely beauty, more than tubastreas and dendros in the trade and... I love my suns a lot hehe

PS: I like a lot both your tanks, great looking congratulations!

Regards

Thanks for all the great information. I keep my tank at 72 year around, but even that is not cold enough for some of the awesome NPS out there. I have to agree with you, this coral is really neat. I would love to get certified and see one in person some day and see all the NPS i keep in its natural environment.

I really hate to hear about how much the fishing industry is messing up the sea floor and NPS reefs. :headwalls: Some people just don't care or don't understand the damage they are causing.

You're welcome,
Yep, a lot of them are not available or cannot do in the same system, but you're so lucky man! Some more species of lps NPS are available (even scarce, I dunno) in the US than in EU. In example I incredibly envy you having these 'whitie' colonies. I can only dream with and I would probably kill for them hehehe. So enjoy them, you can!

Regards!

Are you talking about

Or the stuff in upper left hand corner? If so its Florida cup coral. Its illegal to import, but you are able to get it as a hitchhiker on aquacultured rock. The pink with white tentacles is West African Colangia (Colangia sp.) I have only seen this come into the US once a couple years back.
