orange fan sponge

I just got mine yesterday and am feeding it live nannochloropsis which I am culturing as well as phytofeast and two little fishies marine snow. Is this an acceptable diet? Has anyone kept them before? Thanks!

ml708, how has your fan been doing?

I am thinking of getting myself one of those and was wondering how yours was doing with the food you are providing it. If yours is doing well, thought I might try some of the foods you mentioned. Also, where did you get it from - LFS or online?

I got mine from a LFS, though I have seen them for sale online.

Unfortunately it's doing poorly, clumps of it have started to drop off and I'm only left with the stalk :(

Mine is about 8 months old so far. I feed Reefbugs, dry phytoplankton, Reefroids and dose silicates. Good luck! Sponges are great!

Wow that's amazing! I heard that they are really hard to keep. Do you put it in an area of high flow? Has it grown? Has it ever been out of water before?

no, its never been out of the water. It was tricky getting it acclimated and into the DT without putting transfer water into the DT plus keeping the sponge underwater at all times. It was the first time I got a sponge so it was the first time to figure out my sponge transfer method.

I put it in high flow. I feed the filter feeders a lot. Almost evryday. I dont think its grown any new petals or whatever you want to call them, but it has lots of feeding tubes on it that grew since I got it. The tree sponge has grown though, which I think is weird since I heard they are supposed to die. Ive fragged it so well see what happens. I think the Tree Sponge started growing when I started dosing silicates. Ive been using Sponge Power for a few weeks now but havent noticed a difference with it.

I read high flow is key, and lots of food. I get a pippette and blow the food right through them. Dont know if it does anything?

I have no idea if it can grow back from the stalk, keeping my fingers crossed.

Does the heavy feeding of silicates cause any diatom blooms? How much silicates do you add daily?

I keep the silicate at between 2.0 and 2.5 mg/L and test once a week to be sure it's steady. I have to add some silicate once or twice a month. Haven't had any problems with diatoms, knock wood.

Have been looking through my old photos to see if I can find an old one of the fan when I got it to see if its grown. Maybe it has? Ill post before ad after pix if I find one.

Did you move the stalk to high flow?

I always keep the sponge in high flow. I suspect that it must have been exposed to air at some point before it got to me :(

I guess thats it then. That sucks. Are you going to try again? Blue sponge is supposed to be easier because it is photosynthetic. It's just tougher to find...

Unlikely that I will try it again, got my hands full with a potential orange spot file breeding project and some freshwater gulper cats.

Maybe I will next time!
